Chapter 6 - Into the Deep

Ice-cold water flooded the cabin instantly.

Darkness swallowed them as the heavy armored vehicle sank like a stone into the river. Lena panicked, her lungs burning as she kicked against the stuck passenger door, the pressure of the depth holding it shut like solid concrete.

In the murky water, hands grabbed her waist. Julian.

He pulled her toward the shattered rear window, pushing her through the jagged glass first. Lena kicked frantically, reaching the surface and breaking into the cold night air, gasping for breath while rain lashed against her face.

A second later, Julian breached the surface beside her, hauling her toward the rusty steel ladder of a nearby floating barge.

They dragged themselves onto the wooden deck of the barge, shivering violently in the freezing rain. Behind them, searchlights from the dock began sweeping across the dark water.

"They think we're dead," Julian panted, wiping blood from a gash on his forehead.

Lena was shivering so hard her teeth clicked together, but the cold was nothing compared to the hollow, burning realization inside her chest. "He used me," she whispered, collapsing against the damp wood. "My own father..."

Julian crawled over to her, wrapping his arms around her cold frame, pulling her tight against his chest to share his body heat. For the first time, there was no hostility in his touch—only a fierce, protective warmth.

"Listen to me," Julian growled softly into her soaked hair. "He used you. But he underestimated me. He thought I'd let you die in the crossfire."

"Why didn't you?" she asked, looking up through the rain at his lethal, gorgeous face. "I'm just a liability to you now."
