Chapter 7

Six months later, the spring sun bathed the downtown Chicago skyline in a brilliant, golden warmth.

I stood on the expansive private balcony of my new penthouse, looking out over the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan. The wind caught the edge of my tailored silk blazer, but I didn't shiver. The chill that had gripped my soul during those five years of captivity was completely gone, replaced by the blazing fire of absolute independence and hard-earned freedom.

My tech consultancy firm had just closed a massive, multi-million-dollar acquisition deal, making headlines in the Wall Street Journal. My name was finally recognized not as Julian Vance’s downtrodden, invisible wife, but as a ruthless, brilliant tech entrepreneur and fierce corporate leader.

Darcy stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling vintage champagne, her sharp eyes twinkling with amusement.

“To women who stop cooking for ungrateful parasites and start serving justice instead,” Darcy toasted, clinking her glass against mine with a sharp, clear ring that echoed softly in the spring air.

“To justice,” I smiled, taking a slow, refreshing sip of the bubbly golden liquid.

Down on the street below, life moved at a relentless, bustling pace. Somewhere out there in the freezing rain of the city, Julian and Fiona were learning the brutal, inescapable lesson that when you lock a woman in the dark and demand the impossible, you aren't building a prison for her—you are simply forging the weapon that will eventually destroy you.

And as I looked out at the brilliant horizon stretching endlessly before me, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

The feast was finally over, and I was just getting started.
