Chapter 10 - The Last Apple Pancake

Six months had passed since the night the syndicate fell, its leaders indicted on federal racketeering and kidnapping charges in a trial that shook the nation. The headlines faded, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of a new life that I was still learning how to navigate.
I stood in my own kitchen, the morning sun streaming through the window and warming the hardwood floor. On the stove, a iron skillet hissed gently as a pat of golden butter melted across the surface, filling the air with the familiar, sweet aroma of cinnamon and sliced apples.
Footsteps approached behind me, and a pair of gentle arms wrapped around my waist.
"You're putting too much cinnamon in the batter," Eleanor teased, resting her chin on my shoulder with a warm smile.
"Just the way Frank taught me," I replied softly, a bittersweet smile touching my lips.
We had buried Frank quietly in a small plot overlooking the valley, far from the shadows of his past.
