Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The tactical mercenaries didn't stand a chance. Outnumbered and outgunned by federal reinforcements, the remaining assassins dropped their weapons within seconds, raising their hands as heavy zip-ties were secured around their wrists. The leader, nursing a bleeding shoulder wound, glared daggers at Lucas and me as he was shoved into the back of an armored transport vehicle.
Director Vance walked toward us, his expression a mix of stern gravity and profound relief as he accepted the small black flash drive from Lucas's outstretched hand.
"You brought us the ghost file," Vance said, inspecting the drive before looking down at me. "Thirty-two years of corruption, corporate manslaughter, and illegal abductions. This is enough to dismantle the entire syndicate from top to bottom."
"My mother is still at the house," I said, my voice trembling as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving a hollow ache in my chest. "We left her there with them."
"We've already dispatched a tactical extraction team to the address," Vance assured me gently, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Let's go home."
Dawn was just beginning to break, painting the city skyline in bruised shades of purple and gold as our vehicle pulled back up to the unremarkable house where my nightmare had begun. The front door hung off its hinges, and federal agents swarmed the lawn, securing the perimeter.
We stepped inside the quiet, ruined hallway. In the nursery, sitting calmly in the rocking chair beside the dusty crib, was Eleanor. She looked up as we entered, her eyes locking onto mine with an overwhelming wave of love and sorrow.
"You made it," she whispered, rising to her feet and opening her arms.
May you like
I didn't hesitate. I crossed the ruined floorboards and ran into her embrace, burying my face in her shoulder as the tears I had held back all night finally broke free. She held me tight, stroking my hair just as Frank used to do on the porch so many years ago.
Except this time, the embrace was real. The lie was over.
