Chapter 18 - The Descent from Blackwood

The drive back down Blackwood Ridge was silent, save for the rhythmic swish of the SUV wipers cutting through the steady sheets of autumn rain. The storm had broken in full force, washing away the oppressive fog that had clung to the mountain slopes earlier that morning. In the backseat, the captured commander sat handcuffed between two federal transport agents who had intercepted us halfway down the access road, alerted by the automated distress beacon Lucas had triggered from his phone.
Sitting in the passenger seat, I turned the small waterproof drive over in my palm, feeling the cool metallic edge against my skin.
"What happens now?" I asked, looking sideways at Lucas, who kept his eyes fixed safely on the wet winding road ahead.
"Now, Director Vance and his federal task force use the encryption keys to officially notify every remaining family whose history was altered by the syndicate," Lucas explained, a small, weary smile touching the corners of his mouth. "It won't undo thirty years of lost time, but it means children who never knew where they came from are finally going to get their names back."
When we finally pulled back into the driveway of Eleanor’s house, the afternoon sun was miraculously punching through a break in the heavy gray clouds, casting a brilliant, golden sheen across the wet pavement and the vibrant autumn leaves.
We stepped out of the vehicle into the crisp, rain-washed air. As we walked up the wooden steps to the front porch, Eleanor stopped at the threshold, turning to look back down the long driveway toward the quiet suburban street beyond.

"Frank would have hated this," she murmured with a faint, wry chuckle. "He spent his entire life trying to stay hidden in the shadows, terrified of what the truth would cost."
"He was wrong," I said, opening the heavy front door and stepping inside the warm, familiar hallway where my journey into the truth had begun months ago. "The truth didn't destroy us. It saved us."
