Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Circle

The dining table was bathed in the warm, amber glow of the overhead pendant light as the three of us sat down together for dinner. In the center of the table sat a large ceramic platter piled high with golden-brown apple pancakes, dusted lightly with powdered sugar and glistening with pure maple syrup.

For a long time, none of us spoke. We simply ate, letting the familiar taste of childhood—a taste born of deception, yet sustained by genuine affection—bridge the impossible chasms of our separate histories.

"To new beginnings," Lucas said softly, raising his glass of cider in a quiet toast.

"To truth," Eleanor added, her slate-gray eyes shining with unshed tears as she clinked her glass against his, then turned to meet my gaze with an overwhelming warmth that reached straight down into my soul.

"To family," I smiled, raising my glass to join theirs in the center of the table.

The lies of the past were buried in the mountains, the syndicate was dismantled, and the shadows that had haunted our bloodline for over three decades were finally washed clean by the morning light. As I took a bite of the warm, sweet pancake, I knew that whatever tomorrow brought, I was no longer running from ghosts. I was simply walking forward into a future that was entirely, undeniably my own.
