Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Lies

The pages of the leather-bound journal were brittle, filled with Frank’s jagged, obsessive handwriting spanning more than three decades. As I flipped through them beneath the harsh light of the desk lamp, my stomach churned. It wasn't just a diary; it was a surveillance log.

Frank had documented every milestone of my life with chilling clinical precision—my first day of school, my grades, my friendships, the exact date I lost my first tooth, and the name of the man I eventually married. But scattered between the mundane entries were darker notes detailing payoffs, forged birth certificates, and cryptic references to an organization simply labeled The Syndicate.

"What is this?" I asked, looking up at Eleanor, who was pacing near the shuttered window, periodically peering through the slats into the dark street outside.

"Frank was a high-ranking accountant for a powerful pharmaceutical conglomerate in the city," Eleanor explained, stopping her pacing to meet my gaze. "Thirty-two years ago, I uncovered massive financial embezzlement and illegal human trials tied to the highest levels of the company. I threatened to go to the press. To silence me, they didn't just try to ruin my career—they targeted my family."

She pointed a trembling finger at the journal in my hands.

"Frank was assigned to audit our accounts, but instead of exposing us, he was blackmailed by the executives. They ordered him to destroy us. He couldn't bring himself to kill a baby, so he struck a dark bargain with his handlers: he would fake your death, take you as his own, and hide you in plain sight. In exchange, the company promised to leave me alive, provided I vanished and never looked for you."

"And you just agreed?" I demanded, a flash of bitter resentment piercing through my shock. "You let him take your baby and lived in hiding all these years?"

"I fought for four years until they threatened to unleash assassins if I didn't comply," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she pulled back the collar of her blouse to reveal a jagged, silver burn scar spanning her shoulder. "They watched me every single day. If I stepped out of line, you would pay the price. Frank kept you safe from them, but the price was living a lie."

Before I could process the agonizing weight of her words, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the front porch, followed by the heavy thud of a boot hitting the exterior door.
