Chapter 4 - Breach

The sound of splintering wood shattered the fragile quiet of the nursery. Down the hall, the deadbolt we had slid into place moments earlier groaned under a massive, coordinated impact.

"They're here," Eleanor gasped, her face draining of all color as she lunged toward the desk and pulled a heavy brass key from a hidden compartment. She unlocked a narrow floorboard beneath the crib, revealing a dark, concrete-lined crawlspace. "Get inside. Now."

"No!" I hissed, grabbing her arm. "We need to call the police! We need help!"

"The police are on their payroll, and have been for thirty years!" Eleanor shouted, shoving me toward the opening as a second crash echoed through the house, sounding much closer this time. "Listen to me! Frank left something in that journal—a flash drive taped to the inside cover containing every financial transaction, every name, every confession. It’s the only leverage we have to bring them down. Take it and run through the back alley."

A deafening roar split the air as the front door was completely battered off its hinges, crashing violently onto the hardwood floor. Heavy, purposeful footsteps marched down the hallway, accompanied by the cold, metallic click of firearm safeties being disengaged.

"Eleanor!" a gruff, disembodied voice bellowed from the living room. "We know you're here. And we know the girl is with you. Hand over the ledger and make this quick, or nobody walks out of this house breathing."

Tears streamed down my face as I stared at my biological mother, the woman I had mourned for a lifetime standing beside me for barely ten minutes.

"I'm not leaving you," I whispered.

"You have to," Eleanor said, pressing a heavy iron revolver into my palm, her fingers folding mine tightly around the grip. "You are my legacy, and you are my only redemption. Go!"

With a final, heartbreaking shove, she pushed me backward into the dark crawlspace and slammed the floorboard shut above me, sliding a heavy oak chest over the latch just as the bedroom door was kicked wide open with a deafening crash.
