Chapter 6 - The Alliance in the Dark

The narrow drainage pipe deposited me behind an overgrown briar patch in the alleyway behind the house. Freezing autumn wind whipped across my face as I scrambled to my feet, clutching the leather journal tightly against my chest. The distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the suburban streets, but after what Eleanor had revealed about corrupt officials, the sound brought no comfort—only heightened terror.

I ducked behind a rusted dumpster, my mind racing as I tried to figure out my next move. Frank was dead. Eleanor was trapped inside with heavily armed mercenaries. And I was holding a piece of plastic containing secrets powerful enough to topple a corporate empire.

A sudden flash of headlights illuminated the alley. A sleek, black sedan pulled up silently beside the dumpster, its engine idling with a low, predatory hum. The passenger door swung open automatically, and a gloved hand reached out, grabbing my jacket sleeve before I could dart away.

"Get in, unless you want to spend the next five minutes dodging sniper fire," a sharp, youthful voice commanded from the shadows of the backseat.

"Let go of me!" I cried, struggling against the grip and raising the heavy iron revolver Eleanor had given me, pointing the barrel unsteadily at the silhouette inside.

"If I wanted you dead, you'd already be bleeding on the asphalt," the voice said calmly. The interior light flickered on briefly, revealing a young man in his late twenties with dark hair and sharp, intelligent eyes that looked remarkably familiar. He held up his empty palms in surrender. "My name is Lucas. And before you shoot me, you should know that I'm Eleanor's son—which technically makes us brother and sister."

The gun wavered in my hand. "Brother?" I stammered, the word tasting entirely foreign on my tongue. "Mom never mentioned..."

"She had me ten years after Frank stole you," Lucas interrupted, his expression hardening as he looked toward the front of the house, where shouting could now be heard. "She spent every waking moment searching for the people who took her first child, building a network from the shadows. She knew Frank was slipping away tonight, and she knew they would come for the files. That's why she sent you away with the journal."

"She's still inside," I gasped, tears hot against my cheeks. "They have her, Lucas. We have to go back."

"If we go back now, we die for nothing," Lucas said, his voice laced with a painful, pragmatic resolve that mirrored Frank's cold calculus. "Our only chance to save her—and ourselves—is to take that flash drive to the one person who isn't compromised."

He gestured urgently to the empty seat beside him.

"Climb in. We're going to the FBI field office downtown."
