Chapter 10 - A New DawnThe heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, definitive sound.

He screamed, thrashing against the officers as they dragged him toward the back of the police cruiser, shouting empty threats and desperate pleas that dissolved into the roaring wind of the tarmac. As the cruiser's red and blue emergency lights flashed against the dark night sky, painting the runway in stark crimson and azure, I felt a profound, weightless sense of peace wash over me.

Sienna stood silently a few paces away, wrapping her coat tightly around herself against the biting wind. She looked at me once, a silent acknowledgment passing between two women who had both been burned by the same monster, before turning and walking away into the night alone.

I turned back toward my car, where Marcus sat holding the back door open for me. Inside the warm, leather-scented interior, a tiny soft coo caught my attention.

I leaned inside and scooped my daughter, Lyra, into my arms. She opened her big, beautiful eyes, blinking sleepily up at me under the soft cabin light. I pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, feeling the steady, powerful beat of her healthy heart against my chest.

"We won, my sweet girl," I whispered, resting my cheek against her soft hair. "We survived."

And for the first time in five years, the future belonged entirely to us.
