Chapter 4 - The Iron Lady's ReturnThree days later, I sat propped up in a leather armchair in my private room at Dallas General, looking out the window at the sprawling city skyline. My daughter—whom I had named Lyra, meaning the constellation of the harp, a symbol of resilience and music—was sleeping peacefully in the clear plastic bassinet beside me. Her tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, healthy rhythm.

The door opened quietly, and my personal attorney, Eleanor Vance—no relation to the disgraced board chairman—stepped inside. She carried a sleek leather briefcase and wore a tailored charcoal suit that commanded immediate respect.

"Clara, you look stronger," Eleanor said with a warm, approving smile, kissing my cheek before taking a seat opposite me.

"I have a very good reason to be strong, Eleanor," I replied, my voice cool and resolute. "Did you handle the preliminary filings?"

Eleanor opened her briefcase and laid out a thick stack of legal documents bound with crimson ribbons. A brilliant, predatory glint appeared in her eyes.

"Everything is locked down, Clara. Julian tried to access your joint accounts yesterday morning, only to find that every single cent has been legally frozen and segregated under your prenuptial agreement provisions," Eleanor reported smoothly. "Furthermore, because of the emergency medical abandonment documented by the hospital and Marcus's eyewitness testimony, we have grounds for an immediate, fault-based divorce citing extreme cruelty, endangerment, and financial malfeasance."

I traced a finger along the edge of the table, feeling the supreme satisfaction of a master chess player executing checkmate.

"What about the Sterling Maternity Center?" I asked.

Eleanor smiled broadly. "That’s the best part. When Julian signed the marriage settlement five years ago, unaware that your family's holding company quietly backed the initial seed funding for his empire, he signed a contingency clause. If he committed gross professional negligence that endangered family assets or life, controlling shares automatically reverted to you."

I looked up, a cold, triumphant smile touching my lips. "So, technically... I own the hospital now."

"Lock, stock, and barrel," Eleanor confirmed, sliding a final document across the table. "Julian Sterling is a pauper sitting in a burning building of his own design. All you have to do is sign this, and we initiate the public takeover."

I picked up the heavy fountain pen, feeling the weight of the past five years slip away with every stroke of ink as I signed my name across the dotted line.

"Deliver it to him," I instructed quietly. "Let him know the bill has come due."
