Chapter 3 - The Media Storm and the Golden CageBack at the Sterling Maternity Center, the golden illusion was fracturing.

Julian Sterling paced the plush, imported wool rug of his executive office, his phone vibrating violently against the mahogany desk for the fifteenth time in a minute. The pristine screen displayed a relentless stream of missed calls, urgent text alerts, and social media notifications that were rapidly spiraling out of control.

"Mr. Sterling! You need to see this right now!"

His lead public relations director, Vanessa, burst through the double doors without knocking, her face pale under layers of heavy makeup. She slammed a tablet down onto the desk, spinning it toward him.

The headline flashing across the screen in bold, merciless red letters read: EXCLUSIVE: Luxury Maternity Mogul Julian Sterling Accused of Abandoning Wife in Medical Crisis for PR Stunt.

Julian’s blood ran cold. "Take it down," he snarled, slamming his palm onto the desk. "Threaten them with lawsuits. Buy them out! I don't care what it costs, scrub the internet clean of this garbage!"

"We can't, Julian!" Vanessa’s voice cracked with panic. "It’s already trending nationally. The video of the nurse—Marcus—calling you out in front of the local news crew went viral thirty minutes ago. The reporters caught the whole thing: you holding Sienna’s baby, smiling for the cameras, while your own wife was bleeding to death in the hallway!"

Julian stared at the screen in horror. The video loop played relentlessly. There he was, looking like a narcissistic monster, laughing under the flashing lights while an ambulance wailed in the background, carrying away the wife he had abandoned.

Comments were pouring in by the tens of thousands. Calls for boycotts of the Sterling Maternity Center were already trending under the hashtag #JusticeForClara.

His phone rang again. It wasn't a journalist this time. It was the chairman of the Sterling Board of Directors, Arthur Vance.

Julian answered with a trembling hand, trying to inject a commanding tone into his voice. "Arthur, listen to me, this is all a smear campaign orchestrated by a disgruntled employee—"

"Save it, Julian," Arthur’s voice was like grinding ice. "The board has been in an emergency conference call for the last hour. Your actions have wiped twenty percent off our stock value in sixty minutes. Major investors are already pulling out. As of right now, you are stripped of your CEO duties pending an internal ethics investigation."

"You can't do that!" Julian shouted, his face turning crimson. "I built this empire! My name is on the building!"

"And right now, your name is toxic," Arthur snapped. "Fix this, or you won't just lose the company—you'll lose everything."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Julian stood frozen in the center of his lavish office, the walls closing in around him. For the first time in his gilded, flawless life, panic tasted like ash in his mouth. He grabbed his designer jacket, stormed out of the office, and headed down the VIP corridor toward Sienna’s suite.

He needed an ally. He needed the woman he had given everything up for.

When he pushed open the heavy oak door of the VIP suite, expecting sympathy and reassurance, Sienna was sitting up in bed, staring at her phone with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Sienna, thank God," Julian breathed, rushing toward her. "You saw the news? It’s a total distortion, we need to release a joint statement—"

"Get out," Sienna whispered, her voice shaking with rage.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. "What?"

"Look at me, Julian!" she screamed, hurling her phone across the room where it shattered against the baseboard. "Because of your arrogant, stupid stunt, my baby's birth announcement was hijacked by a scandal! Instead of glowing profiles in society magazines, my child’s first day on earth is associated with a monster who let his wife bleed to death! My parents won't even answer my calls!"

"Sienna, I did it for us! I did it for our future!" Julian pleaded, reaching out to grab her hand.

She recoiled as if he carried a contagious disease. "Don't touch me. You're poison, Julian. Pack your things and get out of my sight before I call security."
