Chapter 13 - The Digital Ghost

I didn't return home immediately. Instead, I sat in my car in the parking garage of a 24-hour diner, the cold steering wheel gripped tightly in my sweating hands. My phone buzzed against the center console, illuminating the dashboard with a text notification from an unknown, unlisted number.

Did you like the new apartment, Arthur? Nice view, isn't it?

I opened the message with a shaking thumb and hit reply. Who is this? Show yourself.

A second text arrived instantly, accompanied by an encrypted link. Open the attachment, little brother. See who really signed your lease.

I clicked the link. It redirected to a secure, private video stream hosted on an encrypted server. The video feed was live, broadcasting in crisp, high-definition black-and-white from a camera mounted in the corner of my apartment living room.

On the screen, I watched an empty room for a moment. Then, the bookcase against the far wall slowly pivoted outward.

A figure stepped out of the shadow of the hidden cavity. He wasn't wearing the tattered, blood-stained rags from the suburban basement. He wore a crisp, expensive dark suit—the exact twin of the one I had worn to our company's founding gala years ago. He turned his face directly toward the camera lens, and a slow, chilling smile spread across his gaunt, hollow cheeks.

It was Julian. Alive. His eyes burned with a terrifying, lucid brilliance, entirely devoid of the brain damage the hospital had reported.

"You thought a little fire and a forged death certificate could wipe the slate clean?" Julian’s voice echoed directly through my phone’s speaker, perfectly synchronized with the live stream. "Vanessa was always an amateur, Arthur. She thought she was using me, but she was just a pawn in the grand architectural design I drew up the day you stole my share of the company."

My fingers tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white. "You planned the whole thing," I whispered to the empty car. "The 'disappearance,' Vanessa's betrayal, the lockdown... all of it was a setup to break me."

"To break us," Julian corrected softly through the screen, tilting his head. "And now, the final phase is about to begin. Look behind you, Arthur."
