Chapter 3 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

"Put it down, Vanessa," I commanded, forcing my voice to steady despite the absolute chaos tearing my reality apart. I kept one hand protectively behind me, shielding Lily, who was trembling uncontrollably. "You think you can just keep us all here? The neighbors know I'm home. My office expects me back—"

"Your office thinks you're on a red-eye flight to Chicago," Vanessa interrupted, a chillingly sweet smile spreading across her lips. She reached into her pocket with her free hand and tossed my smartphone onto the couch. The screen was dark; it was already powered off. "I packed your bags this morning, remember? You were supposed to leave tomorrow. I just accelerated the timeline."

Julian leaned against the wooden doorframe of his prison, chuckling darkly. The sound echoed off the drywall, bouncing through the hollow architecture of the house. "She’s brilliant, isn't she, Artie? The architect who designed this house didn't just build a home—he built a tomb. A custom modification. Double-layered drywall, soundproof insulation, and an air intake vent cleverly disguised as the HVAC return in the guest bathroom."

My mind raced backward, tearing through the timeline of our marriage. The house we bought five years ago—right after Julian's sudden "disappearance." The strange contractor visits that Vanessa insisted on managing alone while I was out of town on business. The inexplicable spike in our electricity bill every winter. It had all been right in front of my face.

"Why?" I choked out, looking between the wife I thought I knew and the brother I had mourned for half a decade. "If you hated me, why not just leave? Why go to these monstrous lengths?"

"Leave?" Vanessa laughed, a harsh, metallic sound. "And give up half my stake in your tech startup? Give up the social status, the country club membership, the perfect suburban facade? I wanted the life, Arthur. But I also wanted the fortune Julian and I had secretly arranged before you two fell out over the company."

Julian nodded slowly, his eyes locked on Vanessa with a bizarre, twisted mixture of adoration and hatred. "We were supposed to run away together, Arthur. But my dear, clever Vanessa realized she didn't need to share the loot with a fugitive. So, she helped me 'disappear' permanently. Only... she didn't have the heart to finish the job entirely. Or maybe she just liked having a dirty little secret hidden behind the drywall."

Lily tugged at my sleeve, her innocent voice cutting through the psychological warfare. "Daddy... why is Uncle Julian so skinny? Is he sleeping in a cave?"

"He's staying right where he belongs," Vanessa snapped, stepping closer, the heavy brass poker poised to strike. "And so are you two. Now, walk into the kitchen. Both of you. Hands where I can see them."
