Chapter 18 - The Last Wall

"Hold on!" Vanessa screamed.

She threw herself onto the concrete edge, grabbing my other arm with both hands and pulling backward with every ounce of maternal strength she possessed. The two guards in suits hesitated, looking between Julian falling into the abyss and their employer tumbling toward the edge, before turning and sprinting toward the perimeter fence.

"Pull, Vanessa! Pull!" I yelled, my fingers slipping against the ash and dirt.

Down in the darkness of the bunker, Julian dangled by one hand from a rusted rebar protruding from the concrete wall. His face was twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated fury, his eyes locked onto mine with a venomous hatred that burned brighter than the fire that had supposedly consumed him.

"You can't bury me, Arthur!" Julian screamed up from the dark, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I am the foundation of this house! I am the structure of your life! You can't escape me!"

With a final, agonizing heave, Vanessa and I scrambled backward, dragging ourselves away from the edge of the pit just as the entire concrete rim fractured and collapsed inward.

CRASH.

A massive slab of reinforced concrete slab slammed downward into the bunker, sealing the opening with a deafening, final thud.

Silence descended upon the ruined lot, broken only by the distant wail of a police siren approaching on the highway.

I lay flat on my back in the ash and dirt, gasping for air, my chest heaving as I stared up at the fading twilight sky. Vanessa collapsed beside me, sobbing quietly into her hands, her designer clothes completely ruined, her manicured fingers caked in soot.

A small pair of arms wrapped around my neck.

"Daddy," Lily whispered into my ear, her little body trembling as she buried her face in my shoulder. "Are we safe now?"

I pulled her close, kissing the top of her blonde curls, and looked over at Vanessa. There were no words left between us—no apologies, no justifications, no plans for the future. Just the heavy, crushing weight of survival.
