Chapter 2 - The Echo of a Ghost

"Hello, brother."

The voice rasped like sandpaper sliding over dry bone. It wasn't a stranger. It was a voice I hadn't heard in five agonizing years—a voice we had buried beneath a six-foot slab of granite and a tear-soaked eulogy.

It was Julian. My twin brother.

My breath caught in my throat, freezing every internal organ. I stumbled backward, crashing into the living room coffee table. "No," I breathed, shaking my head violently, rejecting the very physics of the universe. "No. You're dead. We identified the body. The police, the dental records—we buried you!"

Julian stepped forward, inching past the threshold of the dark cavity into the pale sliver of living room light. His skin was translucent, stretched tight over a skeletal frame like parchment paper. His clothes hung off him in tattered, gray rags. But the most horrifying part wasn't his emaciated state—it was the smile playing across his cracked, bleeding lips.

"The police are very thorough," Julian rasped, his eyes gleaming with a manic, feverish intelligence. "Especially when the person paying them to close the case is standing right behind you."

I whipped my head around to look at Vanessa. She was no longer trying to hide her panic. She had risen to her feet, her expression shifting from terror to a cold, predatory resolve. She pulled a small, heavy silver key from her pocket and clicked it against her thumb.

"You brought this on yourself, Arthur," Vanessa said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "You were always so easily deceived. Julian wanted his share of the estate. But he also wanted me. And when I chose you... well, we had to get creative to make sure he never left."

"You... you locked him in here?" I stammered, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical blade. "For five years? You kept my brother walled up alive inside the house we share?"

May you like

"Not just walled up," Julian cackled, a wet, rattling sound that turned into a coughing fit. "She kept me entertained. Every night, while you slept upstairs dreaming of your perfect little corporate life, my sweet sister-in-law would come down here to keep me company. Isn't that right, Nessie?"

Vanessa’s eyes flashed with pure venom as she raised a heavy brass fireplace poker, pointing the jagged end straight at my chest. "Step away from the wall, Arthur. Or your daughter’s bedtime story tonight is going to be about how daddy disappeared to join his brother."
