Chapter 7 - The Unholy Alliance

Thud.
The brass poker connected with Julian’s skull with a sickening, hollow crunch. The pressure on my throat vanished instantly. Julian collapsed sideways, his body going limp across my chest, a dark pool of blood beginning to seep into the fibers of our living room rug.
I coughed violently, dragging greedy gulps of air into my burning lungs, rolling him off me and gasping for breath.
Vanessa stood over us, breathing heavily, her chest heaving, the heavy poker still gripped tightly in her blood-spattered hands. Her eyes were wide, staring down at Julian’s motionless form. For a second, the mask of cold perfection was completely gone, replaced by the raw, terrified face of a woman who had just crossed a line she could never walk back from.
"Is he... is he dead?" I whispered, my voice sounding like gravel.
Vanessa slowly knelt down, pressing two fingers against Julian’s neck. After a tense, agonizing eternity, she shook her head, her face pale as a sheet. "No. But he's out cold. Concussion, severe one."
She looked up at me, and in that horrifying moment, I saw the true monster of our household. There was no remorse in her eyes—only calculation.
"We need to call the police," I said, pushing myself up onto my hands and knees, my muscles aching. "Vanessa, we have to call 911 right now. Tell them everything."
"Are you insane?" Vanessa hissed, dropping the poker with a heavy clang. She grabbed my arm, her grip iron-tight. "If we call the police, what do you think happens to us? I kept your brother locked in a wall for five years, Arthur! I built a torture chamber in our suburban home! I’ll spend the rest of my natural life behind bars, and you—you’ll either be locked up as an accomplice or lose Lily to the state forever!"
"He’s my brother!" I shouted, pulling my arm away. "You did this! You created this nightmare!"
"And you survived it," Vanessa whispered fiercely, stepping into my personal space, her voice dropping to a venomous hiss. "Listen to me, Arthur. Look at the wreckage. Look at what your twin brother did. He escaped his grave, broke into our home, attacked me, and tried to kill you. You had to defend yourself. We both did."
I stared at her in utter disbelief. "You want to frame him? Again?"
"I want us to live," she said, her voice dropping all pretense of warmth, replaced by a chilling pragmatism. "We tell the police he stalked us, broke in through the crawlspace underneath the foundation, and went on a psychotic rampage. The custom wall cavity? We tell them he must have built it himself years ago before he 'died' as a hiding spot for his stolen assets, and we only just discovered it tonight."
Before I could answer, a loud, insistent knocking echoed from our front foyer door.

Bang, bang, bang.
"Police! Open up! We received a silent panic alarm and a report of a disturbance at this address!"
