Chapter 17 - The Weight of Concrete

I gripped the pen, the plastic barrel slick with my sweat. The tip hovered over the signature line of the confession document. Every fiber of my being screamed against it, but my eyes flicked to Lily, who was now watching me with tears welling in her big, blue eyes.

"Good boy," Julian whispered, stepping closer, his shadow falling over me like a shroud. "Just sign your name, Artie. Right on the dotted line. And we can all walk away from this nightmare."

I pressed the pen to the paper.

A-R...

The first letter scratched against the page. But as my hand moved to form the second letter, my eyes caught a glint of metallic reflection embedded in the concrete foundation right beneath Julian’s polished leather shoes.

It was the heavy, steel handle of the underground vault door—the exact storm shelter hatch Julian had used during his initial "disappearance," which the demolition crew had supposedly sealed over with reinforced concrete.

Julian’s weight shifted slightly as he leaned in to watch me sign.

With a sudden, explosive burst of adrenaline that erased every ounce of fear, I dropped the pen, lunged forward with both hands, and slammed my shoulder directly into Julian’s chest.

"No!" Julian roared, losing his balance as his cane clattered against the stone.

He stumbled backward, stepping directly onto the metal hatch handle. With a loud, mechanical clack, the rusted latch—loosened by the heat of the fire three months ago—gave way under our combined weight.

The concrete slab beneath Julian’s feet tilted downward like a trapdoor.

"Arthur!" Julian shrieked, his arms flailing wildly as he grabbed at empty air.

I twisted away at the last second, but my coat caught on his sleeve, dragging me toward the dark, yawning cavity opening up beneath the foundation. For a terrifying second, we both hung suspended over the black abyss of the underground bunker.

And then, Vanessa broke free from the guards, sprinting across the ash with a desperate cry.
