Chapter 5 - The Empty CoffinInside the cavernous, dimly lit warehouse, towering cranes and rusted shipping containers formed a labyrinth of shadows. In the absolute center of the vast open floor stood a single, illuminated stage—or rather, an open excavation site.

A freshly dug grave.

Towering over the pit was a wooden gallows-style frame, and suspended from its thick hemp rope was a mahogany casket, dangling three feet above the dark, muddy earth. Water dripped rhythmically from a ruptured overhead pipe onto the polished lid of the casket, creating the haunting sound Vincent had heard from outside.

And standing right beside the open grave, leaning casually on a silver-headed cane, was a man in an impeccably tailored dark suit.

His back was turned to Vincent, but the broad shoulders, the posture, and the dark, slicked-back hair were unmistakable. It was the exact silhouette from the penthouse hallway.

"You're late, Vincent," the man said. His voice echoed off the rusted corrugated walls, rich, smooth, and laced with an infuriating calmness. "Traffic on the bridge must be terrible this time of night."

Vincent didn't hesitate. He stepped out from the shadows, raising his gun, locking the sights directly onto the center of the man's spine.

"Turn around. Slowly," Vincent commanded, his voice hard as tempered steel. "Hands where I can see them, or I put a hollow-point through your spine right now."

The man chuckled—a low, melodic sound that grated against Vincent’s raw nerves. Slowly, deliberately, he turned around.

The overhead work light caught his face, and the breath hitched violently in Vincent’s throat. The gun in his hand trembled, the barrel wavering just a fraction of an inch.

It wasn't a stranger. It wasn't an assassin from the Syndicate.

It was Julian Vance. His younger brother. The brother who had supposedly died of a drug overdose in Zurich twelve years ago, whose funeral Vincent had personally financed and attended.

Julian smiled, his face bearing the exact same strong, masculine features as Vincent’s, though etched with a cruel, cynical amusement and a jagged scar running from his jawline down into his collar.

"Hello, big brother," Julian whispered, spreading his arms wide. "Did you miss me? Or were you too busy enjoying the empire you stole from my cold, dead hands?"
