Chapter 8 - The True MastermindBefore Vincent could process the horror of the realization, a sharp click echoed from behind him—the unmistakable sound of a rifle bolt sliding home.

"Put the gun down, Vincent."

It wasn't Julian’s voice. It was a voice smoother, colder, and far more lethal than anything Vincent had heard all night.

Vincent slowly turned his head. Standing atop a metal catwalk ten feet above the floor, framed by the sickly yellow light of an overhead work lamp, was a woman dressed in a pristine white silk blouse and tailored black trousers. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a sophisticated chignon, and her blue eyes shone with absolute, unadulterated coldness.

It was Sarah Vance. Their mother.

The woman who had supposedly suffered a fatal stroke five years ago and was buried in the family mausoleum in Zurich.

Vincent stared up at her, the final pieces of the horrific puzzle snapping violently into place. The board members, the Syndicate, the missing funds, Julian’s fake death, Elena’s disappearance—none of it was a rogue conspiracy. It was a family enterprise. A multi-generational criminal empire built on betrayal, murder, and corporate dominance, with Sarah sitting quietly at the very apex of the pyramid.

"Mother..." Vincent whispered, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "You... you orchestrated all of it."

Sarah leaned against the metal railing of the catwalk, looking down at her two sons with the detached clinical interest of a scientist observing laboratory rats.

"Of course I did, my foolish boy," Sarah said, her voice dripping with condescension. "Do you honestly believe a company as powerful as Vance Global could be built on honest labor? Your father built it on blood, I built it on strategy, and you... you built it on arrogant ignorance, thinking you were the master of your own domain."

Down on the floor, Julian stepped out from the shadows, joining Sarah’s side of the narrative with a smug grin. "You were just our proxy, big brother. A clean, respectable face to sign the contracts and take the fall when the federal investigations finally caught up with us."

Vincent slowly rose to his feet. The shock and grief that had paralyzed him moments before dissolved, replaced by something far more terrifying: a cold, calcified rage that burned hotter than white phosphorus.

"You think you've won," Vincent said softly, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a deadly, hypnotic cadence.

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "We hold the cards, Vincent. Elena is dead, the board has already voted to strip you of your CEO status as of midnight, and the federal indictment for money laundering was filed under your name forty-eight hours ago."

She checked her diamond-encrusted wristwatch.

"In exactly three minutes, the police will raid this warehouse. They will find you standing over a corpse, holding a smoking gun, surrounded by Syndicate assets. Game over."

Vincent didn't panic. Instead, a slow, terrifying smile crept across his lips. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and pressed a single button on the screen.

"You forgot one crucial detail, Mother," Vincent said, his eyes locking onto hers with unyielding fury. "I never trust a family member who comes back from the dead without checking their ID."
