Chapter 16 - THE ULTIMATUMHelen sniffled, wiping her tear-stained face with the sleeve of her bathrobe. "A... a choice? What kind of choice could you possibly have for us?"

Sophie stepped forward, placing a pen on the small laminate bedside table.
"This is a total financial abdication agreement," Sophie explained clearly, her professional tone cutting through the dreary silence of the motel room. "It releases your parents from any further civil liabilities stemming from Derek’s fraudulent loans, and it provides a modest, guaranteed stipend for basic senior housing for the next twelve months."
Helen’s eyes widened with cautious hope. "Really? You're... you're going to help us pay for housing?"
"Under one condition," I interrupted, my voice sharp as broken glass.
I stepped closer, looking down at my mother with absolute, unyielding clarity.
"You sign a legally binding affidavit detailing every single instance where Derek coerced, manipulated, or forged financial documents behind my back, and you formally disown him as your legal heir in front of a federal magistrate."
My father suddenly turned his head, his hollow eyes locking onto mine with shock. "Naomi... disown your brother? He's your flesh and blood!"
"Flesh and blood didn't stop him from trying to throw me into the snow," I retorted, my voice rising slightly for the first time. "Flesh and blood didn't stop Mom from calling me a parasite while she packed my life into garbage bags. You made your choice three years ago when you let him bleed my savings dry. Now you choose whether you want to spend your remaining years protecting him in prison, or saving yourselves."

Helen looked down at the pen on the table. She looked at my father, whose head was bowed in absolute defeat.
Then, without saying another word, she picked up the pen.
