Chapter 17 - THE FALL OF THE GOLDEN CHILDTwo weeks later, the federal courtroom was packed to capacity for Derek Lancaster’s preliminary arraignment.
The charges against him had multiplied like a malignant cancer: wire fraud, identity theft, mortgage forgery, and attempted armed burglary. The federal prosecutors didn't even need to build a circumstantial case—Helen’s signed and notarized affidavit, coupled with the digital audit trails Sophie had compiled, created an airtight mountain of evidence that made a plea bargain impossible.
When Derek was led into the courtroom in bright orange prison jumpsuit cuffs, his eyes scanned the gallery, frantically searching for our mother to rescue him.
Instead, his gaze landed on the front row.
Sitting there, flanked by federal marshals and legal counsel, were Helen and Robert Lancaster. They didn't look at him. Their eyes were fixed firmly on the prosecution table where I sat reviewing my notes.
"Defendant Derek Lancaster, how do you plead to all counts of federal wire fraud and aggravated burglary?" the judge asked, his voice echoing coldly through the oak-paneled room.
Derek’s defense attorney stood up, sweating profusely, and stammered, "Your Honor, the defense requests a three-week continuance to review—"
"Denied," the judge banged his gavel. "How does the defendant plead?"
Derek looked back at our parents one last time, his face twisting into a mask of pure, venomous betrayal. "Not... not guilty," he choked out, his voice cracking with humiliation.
The judge recorded the plea, denied bail due to extreme flight risk, and ordered him remanded immediately back to federal custody pending trial.
As the bailiffs grabbed Derek’s shoulders and hauled him backward toward the holding cells, he screamed out across the silent courtroom:

"Mom! Dad! You’re letting her destroy us! She’s a monster! You’ll rot in hell for this!"
Neither of my parents turned around. They just sat in silence as the heavy metal doors slammed shut behind the golden child who had finally burned down his own house.
