Chapter 1 - THE RECKONING AT BROAD STREETThe rain began to fall in sharp, stinging needles, turning the gray asphalt of Broad Street into a mirror of neon signs and flashing police cruisers. Daniel Hayes slammed his luxury sedan into park, the tires screeching against the curb with a violence that matched the storm inside his chest. He didn't care about the onlookers, the staring pedestrians, or the uniforms gathering by the corner. All he saw was Maya.

She was sitting on the concrete retaining wall, her faded canvas backpack slung over one shoulder, sharing her meager bottle of water with a boy who wore a worn-out gray jacket.
Noah.
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. For two years, that jacket had been a shroud of silence. Every specialist, every high-priced doctor, every terrifying threat Daniel had ever issued across his criminal empire had failed to bring his son back to life. Yet here the boy sat, shoulders relaxed, sharing space with a stranger who looked like she hadn't eaten a decent meal in weeks.
"Noah!" Daniel's voice cracked, raw and desperate, cutting through the hum of the idling squad cars.
The boy flinched, clutching the crumpled photograph of Elena tighter against his chest. But before Daniel could rush forward, an unmarked black SUV pulled up with aggressive speed. The passenger door swung open, and out stepped Victoria—the mistress who had spent the last two years hovering at the edge of his grief like a vulture waiting for a corpse to cool.
"Daniel, thank God," Victoria purred, her silk designer coat dry despite the downpour. She glided toward him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the wet pavement. "The police called my office when they couldn't reach you immediately. I came the second I heard your boy was wandering the streets like a stray."
She reached out, her manicured fingers brushing against the lapel of his expensive suit, her lips parting into a calculated, sympathetic smile. It was the exact same smile she had worn at the hospital doors two years ago, when she thought Elena’s death meant the crown was finally hers.
"Don't touch me," Daniel growled. The baritone of his voice carried a lethal, chilling weight that stopped Victoria dead in her tracks.
Her hand hovered mid-air, confusion flashing across her expertly contoured face. "Daniel? What are you... it's me. I'm here to help you manage this mess. The press—"

"I said, get out of my sight," Daniel hissed, turning his back on her entirely.
Victoria's jaw tightened, venom flickering in her eyes as she looked past him to where Maya stood up slowly from the curb, brushing dirt off her worn jeans. Victoria took a sharp breath, realizing for the first time that the ragged homeless girl was standing closer to Daniel and his son than she had ever managed to get in twenty-four months.
