Chapter 7 - Waking UpI drove back through the rain-slicked streets of the city, the adrenaline of the takedown slowly giving way to a profound, aching vulnerability. The Ghost was a weapon—a cold, unfeeling tool forged by governments and discarded in the shadows. But Daniel Walker was a father whose heart beat entirely for his daughter.

When I pushed open the door to Lily’s hospital room, the harsh fluorescent lights seemed softer.

Lily was propped up slightly against the pillows, her eyes wide and luminous in her pale face. The heavy bandages wrapped around her jaw couldn't hide the tears shining in her eyes. When she saw me, her lips trembled, and she let out a choked, tearful sound.

"Dad..." she whispered, her voice raspy and painful through her wired jaw.

I rushed to her bedside, dropping all pretense of stoicism. I gently took her fragile hand in mine, kissing her knuckles, my own eyes burning with unshed tears.

"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here," I choked out, stroking her hair softly. "You're safe. I promise you, you are safe."

"I... I was so scared," she cried softly, careful not to strain her injury. "They... they told me nobody would ever believe me. They said their families owned the city... that fighting back was useless..."

"They were wrong, Lily," I whispered fiercely, looking straight into her eyes. "Nobody hurts my daughter and walks away. Nobody. Those boys are gone, and the people who protected them are facing justice. You never have to be afraid of them ever again."

Lily stared at me, a flicker of confusion mixing with the relief in her expression. For nineteen years, I had played the part of the mild-mannered, quiet bookstore owner who avoided conflict and never raised his voice. But the fierce intensity in my eyes, the absolute certainty in my voice—it belonged to a man she had never known.

"Dad..." she whispered, tilting her head. "Who are you really?"

I smiled gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "I'm just your dad, Lily. That's all you ever need to know."

Just then, the television mounted on the wall above her bed automatically flickered on.
