Chapter 9 - Shadows on the HorizonThe hospital room suddenly felt smaller, the air growing heavy with an unspoken threat. For nineteen years, I had lived a peaceful lie, believing the ghosts of my past were permanently buried. But the moment I struck back to protect my daughter, I had lit a beacon that could be seen across the global underworld.

"Let them come," I said coldly, my voice dropping an octave as the old killer instinct surged back into my veins. "I didn't leave the shadows because I wanted to. They forced me out. If they want to find The Ghost, they can come through me."

Vance sighed, running a hand over his face. "It's not just about you anymore, Commander. They know about Lily. To them, she's your only vulnerability."

My blood ran ice cold. I spun around to look at Lily. She was watching us, sensing the profound danger radiating between the two men in suits, even if she didn't understand the full scope of our conversation.

"Dad..." Lily whispered, her voice trembling. "What's happening?"

"Nothing that you need to worry about, sweetheart," I said, forcing a reassuring smile onto my face as I walked back to her bedside and took her hand once more. "You focus on healing. Let me handle the rest."

"Commander," Vance interrupted quietly from the doorway. "We don't have much time. Intelligence reports indicate an extraction team is already moving toward this hospital. They'll be here before sunrise."

I looked down at Lily, sleeping peacefully under the mild sedative I had asked the nurse to administer just in case, then looked up at Vance, my eyes burning with a dark, terrifying resolve.

"Clear the floor," I ordered, my voice cutting like steel. "Move Lily to the secure subterranean safehouse under unit four. And get me my tactical gear. The Ghost is back on duty."
