Chapter 11 - The Geneva InvitationBack at Vance Global headquarters in New York, Maya had spent the last forty-eight hours tearing through encrypted financial archives, searching for any trace of the mysterious caller who called himself The Archivist.

Her eyes were bloodshot, and empty cups of black coffee littered her desk. Despite her genius, the digital trail led into an absolute void. It was as if the syndicate backing Hoffman existed entirely outside standard network architectures.

Suddenly, the private elevator chime chimed.

DING.

That was impossible. The top-floor elevator required a biometric retinal scan and a twelve-tier cryptographic key that only Maya possessed.

Maya instinctively slid her hand into her blazer pocket, wrapping her fingers around a compact sonic disruptor she had engineered herself. She stepped back into the shadows beside her bookshelf, her heart pounding a steady, rhythmic beat.

The heavy oak elevator doors slid open smoothly.

No armed assassins stepped out. Instead, a tall, impeccably dressed man in a bespoke charcoal suit walked into the office. He wore white leather gloves and carried a heavy, crimson velvet box embossed with a golden wax seal.

He stopped in the center of the room, looking around with calm admiration before speaking in crystal-clear, neutral-accented English.

"You keep the office much colder than Mr. Hoffman did, Ms. Vance. But then again, cold environments suit sharp minds."

"Who let you up here?" Maya demanded, stepping out from the shadows, her voice sharp as glass. She kept her hand firmly on the disruptor. "My security system cannot be bypassed by biometric spoofing."

The man smiled faintly, untouched by the threat. He placed the heavy velvet box gently onto the mahogany desk.

"Your security is state-of-the-art, little one. But when you operate at the level of global governance, keys are merely suggestions." He tapped the golden wax seal on the box. "The Sovereign Syndicate formally invites you to the annual economic summit in Geneva, Switzerland, this coming Friday. The Chairman wishes to make your acquaintance."

Maya stared at the box, a cold realization washing over her. "The Sovereign Syndicate... So Hoffman was just a errand boy for you ghosts."

May you like

"Hoffman was a tool that broke," the man replied smoothly, turning toward the elevator. "The Syndicate offers you a choice, Maya Vance. You can continue playing defense in this glass tower until your empire crumbles... or you can take your rightful place at the table where the world is actually run. We expect your answer in Geneva."

The elevator doors closed silently behind him.
