Chapter 1 - The Shattered IllusionThe glittering chandeliers of the Grand Horizon ballroom suddenly felt less like a celebration and more like an interrogation spotlight. The collective intake of breath from three hundred of the city’s elite was almost audible.

Julian West’s hand hovered in the air, inches from his daughter’s shoulder, frozen by the sheer gravity of Sophie’s confession. Mommy.
The word hung in the vaulted air, poisoning the immaculate atmosphere of the engagement banquet. Vivian stepped forward, her silk gold dress whispering against the marble floor, her face an expert mask of aristocratic grace cracking at the seams.
"Julian," Vivian murmured, her voice dripping with poisoned honey. "The child is clearly exhausted. The flashbulbs, the pressure of the evening... she doesn't know what she's saying."
"She knows," Anna whispered.
The quiet confession tore through the tension like a razor. Anna knelt on the cold floor, ignoring the disapproving gasps of the socialites, and gently pulled Sophie into her arms. The little girl buried her face in the coarse fabric of the waitress's apron, sobbing uncontrollably—not with the theatrical tantrums Julian was used to, but with the raw, starved desperation of a child who had found an oasis in a wasteland.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, his gaze locking onto Anna. Beneath the shock, a cold, calculated panic began to rise. Julian was a man who built empires on public perception; his PR firm had orchestrated this very night to erase the tragedy of his late wife’s death and cement his dynasty with Vivian.
"Who are you?" Julian’s voice was low, dangerous, vibrating with suppressed fury. "You’re an agency temp. How long have you been manipulating my daughter?"
"I didn't manipulate anyone, Mr. West," Anna said, her voice steady despite the tears streaming down her face. She looked up, meeting the billionaire's ice-blue eyes without flinching. "I just answered the door when she locked herself in your study crying. I just stayed on the floor with her when you were too busy taking calls from Tokyo."
Camera shutters clicked furiously from the press gallery at the back. The scandal was already writing itself.
Vivian’s smile vanished completely, her fingers digging into her champagne glass until her knuckles turned white. "Get this girl out of here. Security!"

"No!" Sophie screamed, clinging to Anna’s neck with terrifying strength. "If she leaves, I'm never coming back!"
Julian froze. He looked at his daughter—really looked at her—and realized with a sickening jolt that he didn't know her at all.
