Chapter 1 - The Intruder in the Nursery

The heavy mahogany door of the nursery didn’t creak; it swung open with the oiled silence of elite security engineering.

Gabriel Castellano stepped across the threshold, his Italian leather shoes absorbing every sound. His pulse hammered a steady, furious rhythm against his ribs, but his face remained a mask of carved granite. In his right hand, a suppressed Sig Sauer P226 weighed heavy and familiar.

Two hours ago, the estate's motion logs had flagged an anomaly in the third-floor west corridor—a dead zone theoretically sealed by biometric deadbolts. But the alarms hadn't sounded. The central grid had been bypassed with surgical precision, using a localized frequency jammer that only a handful of intelligence agencies—or high-level traitors—possessed.

Gabriel’s mind raced through a horrifying ledger of possibilities. A surviving Falcone loyalist? A rogue CIA asset settling a debt? A hit squad sent to finish the Castellano bloodline once and for all?

He rounded the corner of the grand mahogany crib, ready to unleash a barrage of bullets into whoever dared cross his threshold.

Then, his breath caught in his throat.

The room wasn't occupied by a masked assassin or a tactical team. Instead, kneeling beside the bassinet was a young woman in a plain, mud-stained maid’s uniform. Her dark hair was pulled back in a frantic, unkempt knot, escaping strands clinging to her damp forehead. She wasn't holding a weapon. She was holding Enzo.

The baby was pressed tight against her bare chest, her blouse torn down the front to expose bruised, milk-heavy skin.

Gabriel’s vision narrowed to a blood-red tunnel. Rage, hot and blinding, surged through his veins. How dare a common servant touch his son? How dare an unauthorized stranger breach his sanctuary and expose herself to his dying heir?

"Drop your hands," Gabriel growled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that could curdle blood. He raised the pistol, leveling the black barrel directly between the woman’s shoulder blades. "And step away from the child."

The maid froze. For a terrifying second, Gabriel thought she might drop the infant. Instead, she slowly turned her head. Her eyes—wide, luminous, and rimmed with exhaustion—locked onto his. There was no fear in them. Only a fierce, protective defiance that shocked him to his core.

"If I move, he stops," she whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "Shoot me if you want, Mr. Castellano. But if you pull that trigger right now, you kill your own son."

Gabriel’s finger tightened on the trigger, the cold steel biting into his skin. But before he could issue a final command, a sound echoed in the quiet room that made the world stand still.

Suck. Swallow. Breathe.

It was a rhythmic, greedy sound. The sound of a starving baby finally getting what he needed. Enzo’s tiny hands, which had been clenched in permanent pain for weeks, uncurled. His fingers pressed flat against the woman’s warm skin.

Gabriel stared, the gun trembling slightly in his grip. His son was feeding.
