Chapter 8 - Empire of Ashes

Dawn was breaking over Cold Spring Harbor, painting the Atlantic horizon in streaks of bruised purple and burning gold.

The bulletproof gates of the Castellano estate swung open wide. A convoy of five matte-black SUVs rolled out in military formation, tearing down the coastal highway toward New York and the heart of Moretti’s territory.

Inside the lead vehicle, Gabriel Castellano sat in the backseat, staring out the window at the rising sun. His phone buzzed against his palm. He looked down at the encrypted screen: a live video feed from the third-floor nursery camera.

On the small screen, Elena was sitting in the rocking chair, peacefully nursing Enzo as the morning light flooded the room. The baby was healthy, strong, and growing by the day.

Gabriel locked his phone and slipped it into his jacket pocket.

Two hours later, Victor Moretti’s luxury waterfront warehouse in Hoboken was nothing more than a smoking ruin of twisted steel and burning concrete. The Castellano empire hadn't just defended its territory; it had swallowed its enemies whole.

By nightfall, Gabriel returned to the estate. He walked past the armed guards, bypassed the security checkpoints, and climbed the stairs to the third floor with a quiet, heavy tread.

He pushed open the nursery door without knocking.

Elena looked up from the rocking chair. The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp. Enzo was fast asleep in her arms, breathing softly.

Gabriel walked over, standing beside the chair. He looked down at the child—his son, their son—and then raised his eyes to meet Elena’s. There was no mafia boss left in the room tonight. Just a man who had finally found his way home.

"Is it over?" Elena asked quietly.

Gabriel reached out, his calloused hand gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. A rare, genuine ghost of a smile touched the corners of his lips.

"It's just beginning," Gabriel said softly. "Welcome home, Elena."
