Chapter 6 - Betrayal in the Shadows

Midnight descended over Cold Spring Harbor like a shroud of black velvet.
Inside the third-floor suite, Elena lay awake in the quiet darkness. Enzo was sleeping soundly in his crib next to her bed. The rhythmic hum of the high-end air purifier was the only sound cutting through the stillness.
Suddenly, a faint, metallic click echoed from the hallway.
It wasn't the heavy, reassuring thud of Rocco’s tactical boots. It was soft. Sneaking. The sound of a biometric keypad being overridden with a localized override code.
Elena’s blood ran cold. She slipped out of bed in her silk pajamas, moving with absolute silence toward the nursery door. She peered through the narrow brass security peephole.
In the dim corridor, two men in dark tactical gear were standing over the unconscious body of the guard posted outside her door. The guard was slumped against the wall, breathing heavily from a heavy dose of medical-grade tranquilizer.
The men didn't look like Castellano enforcers. They wore unmarked black uniforms, and their faces were obscured by balaclavas.
Moretti's men. They had breached the interior perimeter.
Panic threatened to paralyze Elena, but her maternal instincts took over with blinding speed. She locked the nursery door from the inside and shoved a heavy oak dresser against the frame.
Clack. Whir.
Outside, the keypad outside her door beeped violently as a digital override cracked the electronic lock. The heavy oak door shuddered under a massive, coordinated kick.
Bang! Bang!
The lock shattered, and the door burst inward, splintering the wood and sending debris flying across the carpet.
The two masked intruders stepped into the room, their suppressed submachine guns raised and sweeping the perimeter. The lead operative spotted Elena standing defensively in front of the crib, shielding Enzo with her own body.
"There she is," the lead intruder hissed, his voice disguised by a digital modulator. "Moretti wants the woman and the kid alive. If they scream, put them under."
Elena grabbed a heavy ceramic lamp from the bedside table and hurled it with all her might. It shattered against the lead operative’s tactical helmet, buying her a crucial two seconds. She lunged toward the panic button hidden beneath the nursery window—a direct emergency line wired straight to Gabriel’s private bedroom on the lower level.
Her fingers slammed down hard onto the recessed brass toggle.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
A sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the underground tunnels of the estate.
The second intruder cursed loudly, lunging forward and grabbing Elena by the wrist, wrenching her away from the crib. Elena screamed, kicking and clawing at his face, trying to protect Enzo who had woken up wailing in terror.
"Gotcha, bitch," the operative growled, twisting her arm behind her back.

Before he could draw a sedative syringe from his tactical belt, the hallway behind them exploded into a flurry of motion.
Gabriel Castellano had arrived.
