Chapter 3 - The Mafia Boss's Dilemma

Gabriel lowered the Sig Sauer completely, letting it hang by his side as if it weighed a ton. He walked slowly toward the rocking chair by the window, his knees feeling suddenly weak. He sank into the leather cushions, staring at the two people who had just upended his entire empire.

For two months, Gabriel Castellano had ruled his underworld kingdom with an iron fist, executing traitors and burning rival syndicates to ashes because he believed he had nothing left to lose. He thought the fire had taken everything.

Now, sitting in the dim nursery light, he realized he had been wrong.

"If the Castellano inner circle finds out you're here," Gabriel said, his voice dangerously low, "they won't care about your contract or your surrogate status. They will see you as a liability. A loose end from a dead past that could invite enemies to our doorstep."

"Let them try," Elena said without a trace of fear. "I watched my baby starve for two weeks while you brought in men in white coats who only knew how to poke him with needles. I am not leaving this room, Gabriel. You can shoot me now, or you can let me keep your son alive."

Gabriel rubbed his temples, a splitting headache blooming behind his eyes. The sheer logistical nightmare of the situation was staggering. If Elena stayed, she was a security risk. If she left, Enzo would stop feeding within the hour, and the monitors would start their agonizing, slow beep once more.

"You don't understand how this world works, Elena," Gabriel said, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "The Falcones are gone, but there are vultures circling. Every capo in New York is waiting for me to show a weakness. An unknown woman—a surrogate everyone thought died in the safehouse explosion—appearing in my nursery? It paints a target on your back and Enzo's."

"Then hide me," Elena challenged, her gaze locking onto his with absolute fearlessness. "Keep me locked in this nursery. Treat me like a prisoner. Call me whatever you want on your books. But do not dare tell me I can't feed my child."

Before Gabriel could answer, a sharp rap echoed at the door.

"Boss?" It was Rocco, Gabriel's hardened head of security, his voice muffled through the reinforced wood. "We caught motion sensors tripping in the west wing. Are you alright in there? Should we sweep the floor?"

Gabriel froze. His eyes darted from the door back to Elena, who had tensed instantly, clutching Enzo tighter to her chest.

If Rocco opened that door, he would see an unauthorized woman half-naked in the nursery with the heir. Standard protocol dictated that Rocco would draw his weapon and neutralize the threat before asking questions.

Gabriel had three seconds to make a choice that would change the trajectory of his entire life.
