Chapter 4 - The Shadow Agreement

"Hold your position, Rocco," Gabriel called out, his voice sharp and authoritative enough to cut through the door.

"Boss? Are you sure? The sensor logs—"

"I was checking the perimeter of the nursery myself," Gabriel interrupted, standing up slowly and buttoning his jacket. "A stray cat or a wind draft tripped the internal relay. Stand down and report back to the lobby."

A heavy pause hung in the hallway. "Understood, Mr. Castellano. Checking out."

Footsteps faded down the corridor, disappearing into the ambient hum of the estate's ventilation system. Gabriel let out a long, slow breath he didn't realize he was holding. He turned back to face Elena, who was gently rocking the sleeping baby against her chest. Enzo looked entirely at peace for the first time since his birth.

"That bought us time," Gabriel said, walking over to the heavy oak door and turning the deadbolt from the inside with a definitive click. "Until dawn."

Elena looked up, her expression guarded. "And when dawn comes? What happens then?"

"Then we rewrite the rules," Gabriel said, his eyes narrowing as his mafia-boss instincts kicked into overdrive. "If you walk out of this house, you die. If you stay as a maid, someone will eventually check the payroll and put a bullet in your head. So we create a new reality."

"What kind of reality?"

"You aren't a maid anymore," Gabriel stated, stepping closer to her, his shadow falling over the rocking chair. "Starting tonight, you are Miss Vance. A specialized postpartum nurse and lactation consultant hired from a Swiss clinic under strict NDA. You will be given a suite adjacent to the nursery. You will have armed guards outside your door twenty-four hours a day—not to keep you safe from the outside world, but to keep you safe from my own men."

Elena blinked, processing the audacity of the plan. "And my past? My old life?"

"Erased," Gabriel said flatly. "By noon tomorrow, I will have my IT team scrub every digital footprint, every tax record, every hospital file from your old life. You will officially exist only within the walls of this estate. Cross me, Elena, and there is no hole deep enough on this planet for you to hide in."

"And if I don't cross you?" she asked softly, her chin tilted up defiantly. "What do I get?"

Gabriel looked down at his son, whose tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, healthy rhythm against Elena’s skin. For the first time in two months, the cold, dead weight in Gabriel’s chest flickered with something resembling warmth.

May you like

"You get to watch him grow," Gabriel said quietly. "And you get my protection. Absolute and unyielding."

Elena stared at him for a long moment, searching the hard planes of his face for any sign of betrayal. Finding only cold, ironclad resolve, she gave a slow, deliberate nod. "Deal."
