Chapter 5 - The Wolf at the Door

Three weeks passed inside the fortress of Cold Spring Harbor, operating under a fragile, heavily guarded equilibrium.

To the outside world, the Castellano estate remained a mourning fortress, impenetrable and silent. Inside, however, the nursery had transformed. Elena Vance lived in the luxurious suite adjoining the master wing, her name rewritten in Gabriel’s private corporate ledgers as an elite pediatric specialist.

Enzo was thriving. The translucent, bird-like fragility of his skin had vanished, replaced by healthy baby fat, pink cheeks, and a pair of dark, piercing eyes that mirrored his father’s. The terrifying, slow beeps of the heart monitor had long been replaced by peaceful, rhythmic silence.

Gabriel found himself drawn to the nursery more and more. At first, it was just to check on the boy, ensuring the asset was secure. But slowly, grudgingly, it turned into something else. He would sit in the corner armchair during the late hours of the night, watching Elena nurse the baby, listening to her hum quiet, forgotten lullabies that reminded him of a childhood he thought he had buried forever.

But peace in the Castellano empire never lasted long.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. A black bulletproof Lincoln Town Car breached the front security gates—not with stealth, but with the arrogant, blaring horn of a man who owned half the politicians in Washington.

Victor Moretti.

Moretti was the undisputed capo of the New Jersey syndicate, a shark who had spent the last twenty years waiting for Gabriel Castellano to slip up. With Isabella dead and the heir supposedly on the deathbed, Moretti smelled blood in the water. He had arrived uninvited, flanked by four armed enforcers, demanding an audience in Gabriel’s private study.

Gabriel sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his face carved from ice, as Moretti paced the Persian rug like an owner inspecting a slaughterhouse.

"I hear the boy is fading, Gabriel," Moretti said, a sickening, oily smile stretching across his lips. "Tragic business about your wife. Truly. But a dynasty can't run on empty cribs. Without an heir, the commission is going to start looking very closely at your shipping ports in Newark."

Gabriel didn't blink. He poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal glass, pushing one across the desk toward Moretti. "My family affairs are my own, Victor. Let's talk about Newark."

"No, let's talk about the future," Moretti laughed, leaning forward and resting his palms on the desk. "Word on the street is your nursery is locked tighter than Fort Knox. Rumor has it you've got a doctor up there working miracles. Or maybe... a ghost?"

Gabriel’s grip on his glass tightened until his knuckles turned white. A cold, lethal fury settled deep in his stomach. Moretti had spies inside the local medical supply chain. He was fishing.

"If you ever step foot on my property uninvited again, Victor, you won't leave through the front gates," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even Moretti’s smile faltered.

Moretti straightened up, adjusting his silk tie with a nervous twitch. "Just a friendly warning, Castellano. Weakness invites wolves. And if that baby dies, you won't have an empire left to defend."

With that, Moretti turned and strutted out of the study.

Gabriel waited until the heavy oak doors clicked shut. Then, he slammed his glass down against the mahogany wood, shattering the crystal into a thousand sparkling pieces. He reached for his secure intercom line.

"Rocco," Gabriel barked.

"Boss?"

"Moretti is leaving. Have our men tail his car past the state line. And double the security detail around the third-floor nursery. Nobody gets in. Nobody."

Gabriel slammed the receiver down, but a cold sweat broke out across his neck. Moretti wasn't just fishing. He had local informants. And if he found out about Elena—if he found out the surrogate was alive and holding the key to the Castellano heir—he would use her to destroy everything Gabriel had built.
