Chapter 12 - The Unwelcome Gift

The peace of the morning was shattered at precisely 11:15 AM when the private elevator chimed.
Vincent and Sloan exchanged a quick, guarded glance. Security protocols dictated that no one could access their floor without prior clearance, yet the private chime echoed clearly through the penthouse foyer.
The heavy doors slid open.
Standing in the entryway was Marcus Vance, Vincent’s long-time chief of staff, holding a thick, silver-embossed leather folder. But it was the person standing just behind him that made the air in the room freeze.
Eleanor Vance.
She looked older than she had two years prior, her posture slightly stiffer, but the cold, calculating glare in her eyes remained entirely unaltered. She stepped past Marcus without waiting for an invitation, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
“Mother,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he stepped protectively in front of Sloan and Willa. “You are trespassing. Security should have intercepted you in the lobby.”
“Security answers to the board, Vincent, and a majority of the board still remembers who built Hale Holdings,” Eleanor replied smoothly, stopping ten feet away. She didn't look at Willa; instead, her gaze locked onto Sloan with pure, unadulterated ice. “I didn't come here to start a war. I came to deliver an inevitability.”
She motioned to Marcus, who reluctantly stepped forward and placed the thick silver folder on the entryway console table.
“What is that?” Sloan asked, stepping around Vincent, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear.

“That,” Eleanor said, her lips curving into a thin, triumphant smile, “is a formal petition filed in the New York Supreme Court this morning. A probate challenge regarding the trust established by your late father, Marcus Carter.”
Sloan went completely still.
