Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

By the following week, the penthouse had undergone a silent, radical transformation. Vincent hadn't gone back to his office on Park Avenue; instead, he had converted the formal dining room into a high-security command center where his executive team brought reports directly to him, standing awkwardly beside high chairs and diaper genies.
Sloan watched from the kitchen island as Vincent ended a encrypted video call with his European partners, snapping his laptop shut with a sharp click.
“You’re neglecting your empire,” she noted, sipping her tea.
Vincent walked over, pouring himself a cup of black coffee before leaning against the marble counter opposite her. “My empire is right here. Everything else is just logistics.”
“Don't play the devoted family man with me, Vincent. It doesn't suit your brand.”
“My brand changed the moment I walked through that door and saw her eyes,” he said quietly, his gaze steady and unblinking.
Before Sloan could retort, the secure intercom at the private elevator bank chimed.
Vincent frowned. Visitors were strictly screened, and Marcus knew better than to send anyone up without clearance.
A moment later, the private elevator doors slid open.
Stepping out into the penthouse foyer was a woman wearing an impeccably tailored Chanel suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe chignon, carrying a leather designer briefcase like a weapon.
Eleanor Vance—Vincent’s mother, and the former matriarch of Hale Holdings—strode into the living room, her sharp eyes scanning the nursery items scattered across the minimalist decor with undisguised disdain.
“Well,” Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the silence like glass. “I heard rumors that my son had abandoned his corporate duties to play nursemaid to a stray ghost from his past. I see the rumors were entirely accurate.”
Sloan stiffened instantly, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink.
Vincent stood up, blocking the line of sight between his mother and Sloan. “Mother. What are you doing here? You weren't invited.”
“Since when does a mother need an invitation to visit her own son’s home?” Eleanor demanded, stepping closer, her gaze finally locking onto Sloan with blistering contempt. “Especially when that home has been infiltrated by a scheming ex-wife trying to anchor herself to the Hale fortune with a newborn baby of questionable provenance.”
The air in the penthouse vanished instantly.
Vincent’s face went dead, cold, and terrifyingly lethal. Before he could speak, Sloan stood up from the island, her posture straight, her chin lifted with a chilling, aristocratic grace that matched Eleanor’s own.
“Questionable provenance?” Sloan repeated softly, her voice smooth as silk and twice as dangerous. “You might want to check the baby’s eyes before you insult my lineage, Eleanor. She has the exact same curse as your son.”
Eleanor’s eyes flicked to the bassinet where Willa lay sleeping. For a second, the older woman faltered, seeing the unmistakable imprint of the Hale bloodline stamped across the infant's face.
“It doesn't matter whose eyes she has,” Eleanor recovered quickly, her voice sharpening. “A child born out of a dissolved marriage, hidden away like a dirty secret, has no place in the Hale dynasty. Vincent, you will file for full emergency custody immediately. My legal team is already drafting the papers.”

Vincent stepped forward, towering over his mother. The atmosphere in the room grew heavy, oppressive, and violently charged.
“If your legal team drafts another document regarding my daughter,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper that made even Eleanor step back, “I will strip every cent of your trust fund, cut you off from the board, and ensure you never set foot in New York again. Get out of my house.”
