Chapter 2 - THE VEILED THREATThe morning sun cast long, melancholic shadows across Ethan’s executive office on the 50th floor of Vance Global Enterprises. He stood by the panoramic window, nursing a cup of black coffee, watching the ants-like crawl of traffic far below.

The incident from the previous night had been scrubbed from the building’s internal logs, but Ethan’s mind was a battlefield of paranoia and fury. He had already dispatched his legal team to freeze all joint accounts associated with Victoria Sterling and revoke her access codes to his properties. Yet, an uneasy sensation crawled up his spine. Victoria wasn't the type of woman to go down quietly. She was born into old money, connected to powerful syndicates of corporate elites who could crush a competitor with a single whispered rumor.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts. His personal assistant, David, stepped into the room, holding a sleek black tablet, his expression grim.
"Mr. Vance, you need to see this immediately," David said, his voice tight.
Ethan didn't turn around. "Did Victoria's lawyers file a preliminary injunction?"
"Worse, sir." David handed over the tablet. "It’s not a lawsuit. It’s a hostile takeover maneuver, executed less than ten minutes ago."
Ethan snatched the device. His eyes scanned the financial data flashing across the screen. Vance Global’s stock had suddenly dipped by four percent following an unexpected dump of institutional shares. More alarmingly, an anonymous holding company named Aegis Capital had aggressively bought up the dumped stock, acquiring a staggering 14% voting block in the company.
"Aegis Capital?" Ethan muttered, furrowing his brow. "Who owns Aegis? They came out of nowhere."
"That’s the horrifying part," David swallowed hard. "Public records show the primary beneficiary is a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. But the local proxy sign-off... it bears a power of attorney signature authorized by Victoria Sterling's family trust."
Ethan’s grip on the tablet tightened until his fingers ached. So this was her game. She wasn't just striking out of emotional spite; she was executing a calculated economic siege against his life's work.
"She’s weaponizing her family's conglomerate," Ethan realized out loud, his jaw clenching. "She knew about our impending merger with the Asian tech portfolio, and she’s trying to sabotage our board approval next week."
"She didn't just stop at the stock market, sir," David added hesitantly, tapping the screen to bring up a news alert. "Look at this local tabloid headline published twenty minutes ago."
Ethan looked down. The bold headline screamed: EXCLUSIVE: CHILD ENDANGERMENT AT THE VANCE PENTHOUSE? INSIDER ALLEGAGES HORRIFIC HOME LIFE FOR BILLIONAIRE'S DAUGHTer.
The article was filled with fabricated, venomous lies—claiming that Ethan was an unfit, abusive father, and that his household was a hotbed of neglect, heavily implying that Child Protective Services needed to intervene immediately. The accompanying photo was a cropped, distorted image of Maria holding a crying Lily outside the penthouse balcony, framed to look as though Maria was struggling with a distressed child while Ethan looked on with indifference.
"She’s going after Lily," Ethan whispered, the blood draining completely from his face. The corporate war was one thing, but using his innocent six-year-old daughter as collateral damage crossed a line that warranted total destruction.
Before David could respond, the office landline buzzed sharply.
Ethan picked up the receiver. "Vance."
A familiar, chillingly sweet voice purred through the speaker. "Good morning, my sweet Ethan. Did you enjoy the morning paper? Or perhaps the little financial surprise waiting on your trading desk?"
Ethan’s voice dropped into an icy register. "You crossed a line, Victoria. Dragging my daughter into this makes you a monster. Whatever games you're playing, I will crush you into dust."
Victoria let out a low, mocking laugh on the other end of the line. "Oh, Ethan... you poor, arrogant fool. You think you can throw me away like a broken toy and face no consequences? This is just the appetizer. By the end of the week, you won't just lose your company—you’ll lose your parental rights entirely. Enjoy your last few days as a father."
Click. The line went dead.

Ethan slammed the phone back onto its cradle, his eyes blazing with a dangerous, protective fury. He looked at David, who stood watching him with wide, alarmed eyes.
"Cancel my afternoon schedule," Ethan ordered, his voice cold as steel. "Contact our chief legal counsel, bring in our head of private security, and get me a direct line to the director of Child Protective Services. We are going on the offensive."
