Chapter 3 - THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHINGLater that afternoon, the conference room on the 45th floor resembled a war room. Blueprints of the penthouse, financial ledgers, and dossiers on Victoria Sterling’s inner circle were strewn across the polished oak table.

Marcus Thorne, head of Vance Global’s private security and a former elite intelligence operative, leaned over the table, tapping a finger on a dossier photo of a sharp-eyed, middle-aged man in a tailored suit.
"This is Julian Vance," Marcus stated grimly.
Ethan looked up from a legal brief. "My estranged uncle. What does he have to do with this?"
"Everything," Marcus replied, pulling up a digital surveillance log. "Our digital forensics team traced the routing of the Aegis Capital stock acquisition. The money didn't just come from Victoria’s family trust; it was funneled through a shell account co-managed by Julian Vance. Your uncle has been quietly buying up your disaffected shareholders for the past six months, and Victoria was the Trojan horse planted inside your personal life to spy on your domestic security."
A heavy silence fell over the room. David stared in disbelief. "So... their relationship wasn't even real? She was a plant from day one?"
"Precision-engineered espionage," Marcus nodded. "She seduced her way into your inner circle to find your vulnerabilities. And she found your daughter. They knew that if they could manufacture a credible child endangerment case, the family courts would slap emergency restraining orders on you, freeze your executive voting rights, and hand provisional guardianship over to a compliant relative—namely, your uncle Julian."
Ethan felt a cold sweat break out across his neck, followed instantly by a surge of pure, unadulterated rage. His uncle Julian had always resented Ethan’s father for leaving him out of the primary inheritance ten years ago. Julian had spent a decade plotting his revenge, and using Victoria as a pawn was his masterstroke.
"Where is Lily right now?" Ethan asked, panic suddenly seizing his chest.
"She’s secure in the penthouse with Maria," Marcus assured him quickly. "I doubled the armed detail outside her door. Nobody gets within a mile of that child without my say-so."
Suddenly, the heavy conference room doors swung open without warning.
A sleek, elegant woman walked in, flanked by two formidable-looking lawyers carrying thick leather briefcases. It was Samantha Sterling, Victoria’s ruthless older sister and senior partner at Sterling & Croft Law Firm—one of the most feared corporate litigation firms on the East Coast.
"Well, well, look at the little boardroom meeting," Samantha sneered, stepping into the room with an air of aristocratic arrogance. She didn't wait for an invitation; she pulled out a chair at the head of the table and sat down, crossing her legs.
Marcus instinctively stepped forward, his hand dropping toward his hip where his concealed tactical radio rested, but Ethan raised a hand to stop him.
"You’re trespassing, Samantha," Ethan said coldly, not moving an inch from his seat. "Security will have you escorted out in ten seconds if you don't state your business."
Samantha chuckled, pulling a stack of heavy legal documents from her briefcase and sliding them across the table toward Ethan.
"Let's skip the empty threats, Ethan," she said, her smile sharp as a razor. "I’m here bearing gifts. Or rather, a settlement offer that will save you the absolute humiliation of losing everything you've built."
Ethan glanced down at the papers. The title page read: EMERGENCY CUSTODY PETITION & VOLUNTARY CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING AGREEMENT.
"What is this?" Ethan demanded.
"It's very simple," Samantha leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "You sign over fifty percent of your voting shares in Vance Global to Aegis Capital—which effectively makes your uncle Julian the controlling partner. In exchange, Victoria drops all pending family court petitions regarding Lily's 'unsafe environment,' and we quietly retract the tabloid articles. You get to keep your daughter, and we get the company. A fair trade for a father’s love, wouldn't you say?"
The audacity of the proposal was staggering. They were holding his daughter hostage through legal terrorism, demanding his entire legacy as ransom.
Ethan looked at the papers, then looked directly into Samantha’s cold, calculating eyes. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face—a smile that made even seasoned veterans like Marcus take an involuntary step back.
"You really think you've won, don't you?" Ethan spoke softly, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.
Samantha frowned slightly, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her features. "Don't play games, Ethan. You have twenty-four hours before the family court judge signs the emergency injunction based on our witness testimonies."

Ethan stood up slowly, towering over the conference table. He picked up the legal papers, flipped them closed, and casually tossed them into the shredder standing beside the door. The loud, mechanical whirring tore the documents to ribbons in seconds.
"Tell Victoria, and tell my dear uncle Julian," Ethan whispered, his eyes burning with absolute authority, "that they should have checked my background a little closer before they declared war. I don't negotiate with terrorists in designer suits."
