Chapter 5 - ASHES OF THE EMPIREDawn broke over Manhattan, washing the city in pale amber light. Inside the executive suite of Vance Global Enterprises, the atmosphere was entirely transformed. The lingering paranoia that had hung like a toxic cloud over the past week was gone, replaced by an aura of absolute stability and power.

Ethan sat behind his expansive mahogany desk, reviewing the final restructuring documents. The hostile takeover attempt by Aegis Capital had been thoroughly dismantled. With Uncle Julian and Samantha Sterling facing immediate federal indictment for financial fraud, corporate racketeering, and insider trading, the remaining board members had unanimously voted to restore full, unmitigated executive control back to Ethan.
The tabloid smear campaign had also evaporated overnight. Ethan’s public relations team had released the unedited security camera footage of the penthouse incident—proving unequivocally that Victoria had acted with malice toward an innocent child, and that Maria had acted heroically to save her. Public sentiment had instantly shifted; hashtags supporting Ethan and little Lily were trending globally, while the Sterling family name was dragged through the mud of public disgrace.
A soft knock came at the door, and Maria entered, holding a small tray with a fresh cup of coffee and a warm smile.
"Good morning, Mr. Vance," Maria said respectfully, setting the tray down on the desk.
Ethan looked up, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across his face—the first real smile he had worn in weeks. "Good morning, Maria. How is Lily?"
"She's sleeping peacefully in the penthouse playroom," Maria replied, her eyes softening. "She asked if we could make pancakes for breakfast this morning. Regular ones, with extra syrup."
"Tell her it’s a deal," Ethan chuckled softly, leaning back in his leather chair. He looked at the housekeeper with deep gratitude. "Maria... I can never thank you enough for what you did. You didn't just save my daughter's life; you held this family together when everything was falling apart."
Maria shook her head modestly, her hands resting on her apron. "I only did what any decent person would do, Mr. Vance. Family is everything. And little Lily is a precious soul."
"Well, your dedication won't go unnoticed," Ethan said firmly, pulling a document from a folder and signing his name with a flourish. "Effective immediately, your salary has been tripled, and I’ve set up a full college trust fund for your youngest son. Consider it a small token of my eternal appreciation."
Maria’s eyes widened with shock and tears of gratitude welled up in her eyes. "Oh, Mr. Vance... I don't know what to say. Thank you. Thank you so much."
"No, thank you, Maria," Ethan replied softly.
As Maria quietly excused herself to return to the penthouse, Ethan turned his chair back toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city stretched out before him, vast and limitless. The storm had passed, leaving behind a pristine horizon.

He picked up a small silver framed photograph on his desk—a snapshot of Lily laughing heartily as he spun her around in Central Park. He traced the glass gently with his thumb, a profound sense of peace washing over his soul.
The wolves had tried to tear down his house, but in the end, they had only succeeded in burning their own kingdom to ash. He and Lily were safe, unbreakable, and ready for whatever the future held.
