Chapter 9 - THE TRAITOR WITHIN"Well, well, well. Family reunions are always so terribly messy," David said smoothly, his usual nervous demeanor entirely gone, replaced by a chilling, predatory calm. He stepped out of the elevator into the penthouse living room, his gun hand rock steady.

Ethan instinctively threw his arm out, shielding Clara behind him. "David... you? After everything we've been through? You were my right hand!"

"My loyalty isn't to a title, Mr. Vance; it’s to the highest bidder," David sneered, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. "Uncle Julian was a useful idiot, funding the early stages of our operation. But Victoria and Samantha? Amateurs. They thought they were running the show, while I was the one feeding them the operational data from the inside."

Clara gasped behind Ethan, her eyes widening in horror as she recognized the man holding the weapon. "You... you were the clinic administrator who gave me the injections twelve years ago! You worked for Julian from the very beginning!"

"Ten points for memory, little Clara," David laughed softly, keeping his eyes locked on Ethan. "And now, history repeats itself. The Vance family tragedy will simply have a new chapter: a tragic, senseless home invasion where a desperate former employee goes rogue, eliminates the CEO and his sister, and disappears into the night with the company bearer bonds."

Ethan’s mind raced at lightning speed. Marcus Thorne and his security detail were stationed in the lower parking garage and perimeter checkpoints—they couldn't hear what was happening inside the soundproofed penthouse suite unless the panic button was triggered. But David was standing less than ten feet away, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. One sudden move, and a bullet would pierce Ethan’s heart before he could even reach his pocket.

"You won't get away with this, David," Ethan said, keeping his voice eerily calm, buying precious seconds. "The corporate vaults require biometric dual-keys. Even if you kill us, you can't access a single dime."

"Who said anything about the vaults?" David smiled wickedly, stepping closer. "Once you and your sister are conveniently disposed of, the emergency board protocols—drafted by yours truly—automatically grant me interim executive proxy as your most trusted senior aide. Within forty-eight hours, I liquidate the overseas holdings, burn Vance Global to the ground, and catch a private jet to the Maldives."

David raised the barrel of the silenced pistol slightly, aiming squarely between Ethan’s eyes. "Any last words, Mr. Vance? Say hello to your father for me."

Ethan locked eyes with the traitor. His hand slowly slid down toward his trouser pocket, his thumb hovering inches above the hidden panic button.

"I have just one thing to say, David," Ethan whispered coldly. "You should have checked who was standing behind you."

David frowned, a split-second flicker of confusion crossing his face. Before he could turn around, the massive mahogany balcony glass doors behind him shattered inward with an explosive roar.

A dark shadow dropped effortlessly from the upper terrace overhang, hurtling through the air like a tactical missile.

It was Marcus Thorne.

Before David could pivot his weapon, Marcus slammed hard into him, tackling the traitor to the marble floor with bone-crushing force. The silenced pistol flew from David’s hand, skittering across the floorboards as a secondary tactical team swarmed out of the elevator shaft, securing the perimeter in seconds.

David groaned, pinned facedown beneath Marcus’s heavy tactical boots, blood trickling from his lip.

Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath, his hand finally relaxing in his pocket. He turned around and pulled his long-lost sister into a fierce, protective embrace.

"It's over, Clara," Ethan whispered, kissing the top of her head as tears finally spilled over. "You're home. You're safe."
