Chapter 7 - THE UNEXPECTED VISITORThe morning air in the penthouse was crisp and clear. Sunlight poured through the massive glass windows, illuminating the gleaming hardwood floors where little Lily was busy building an elaborate castle out of colorful magnetic blocks.

Ethan sat at the nearby dining table, reviewing quarterly reports on his tablet while keeping a watchful, affectionate eye on his daughter. The trauma of the past month seemed to have faded from Lily’s resilient young mind, replaced once again by innocent laughter and playful chatter.

"Daddy, look! My castle is taller than the empire state building!" Lily called out proudly, holding up a crooked tower of plastic blocks.

Ethan smiled, standing up and walking over to her. "It looks magnificent, princess. Careful you don't let the dragon knock it down."

Before Lily could respond, the sharp, authoritative chime of the private elevator bell echoed through the penthouse.

Ethan’s posture instantly stiffened. Marcus Thorne’s security protocols required all visitors to be pre-cleared twenty-four hours in advance. Unannounced arrivals at the penthouse door were strictly prohibited.

"Maria," Ethan called out smoothly, gesturing for the housekeeper to take Lily toward the back playroom. "Stay with Lily in the back. Let me check the door."

Walking slowly toward the entryway, Ethan kept his hand near his pocket where a panic button linked directly to Marcus’s tactical team was stationed. He reached the heavy mahogany double doors and peered through the secure digital intercom screen.

To his absolute astonishment, standing outside wasn't a tactical operative, nor a process server, nor an assassin.

It was a young woman in her early twenties, dressed in a simple, modest trench coat, clutching a worn leather satchel to her chest. Her dark hair was pulled back into a simple ponytail, and her face was pale, bearing an uncanny, unmistakable resemblance to someone Ethan hadn't thought about in over a decade.

Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat. He unlocked the deadbolt with trembling fingers and pulled the door open.

"Can I... help you?" Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

The young woman looked up, her dark eyes swimming with unshed tears. "Hello, Ethan. It’s been a long time. Or... maybe you don't remember your own sister."
