Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT ENTRAPMENTMidnight cast an eerie, fluorescent glow over the empty streets of downtown Manhattan. Inside the subterranean parking garage beneath Vance Global headquarters, the air was thick with the scent of engine exhaust and damp concrete.

A sleek black town car sat idling in a private reserved bay near the elevators. Victoria Sterling sat in the back seat, nursing a glass of chilled champagne, staring impatiently at her diamond-encrusted wristwatch.

"Where is he?" Victoria muttered to her driver, a burly man named Viktor who had been in her family’s employ for over a decade. "He was supposed to deliver the signed confirmation an hour ago."

"Maybe the billionaire finally realized he's out of his depth, Miss Sterling," Viktor grunted from the front seat, checking his rearview mirror. "Should I circle back up to the lobby?"

"No," Victoria snapped, taking a sip of champagne. "Wait. My sister said his legal team was panicking. By morning, the board will vote him out, and Uncle Julian will take the helm. I’ll finally have my revenge on that arrogant bastard."

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the parking garage flickered violently and died, plunging the entire level into near-total darkness, save for the weak amber glow of the emergency exit signs.

Victoria froze, her champagne glass halting halfway to her mouth. "What’s happening? Did a fuse blow?"

Viktor’s posture stiffened immediately. He reached instinctively inside his jacket. "Stay in the car, Miss Sterling."

Before Viktor could unlatch his door, the heavy concrete perimeter doors at the entrance of the garage slammed shut with a deafening, metallic crash. Heavy steel security shutters rolled down simultaneously, sealing off all exits.

"Viktor, what is going on?!" Victoria shrieked, panic finally piercing through her composure.

"We're locked in," Viktor growled, shifting the car into reverse. But before he could hit the gas, the glaring high beams of three unmarked black SUVs suddenly flashed on from the shadows ahead, blinding them with an intense, inescapable wall of light.

Heavy tactical boots crunched against the concrete floor. From the glare of the headlights, a dozen figures emerged, dressed head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear, their faces obscured by reinforced helmets and night-vision visors. At the front walked Marcus Thorne, flanked by two armed operatives.

Viktor threw the car into drive, slamming his foot on the accelerator, intending to plow right through. But within seconds, heavy spike strips deployed seamlessly from the garage floor, shredding the town car’s front tires with a loud pop-hiss. The vehicle skidded violently across the slick concrete, slamming hard into a concrete structural pillar.

"Open the door!" Victoria screamed, trapped inside as the smoke billowed from the smoking hood.

The rear door was yanked open forcefully. Marcus Thorne stared down at her, his expression like carved granite.

"Step out of the vehicle, Victoria. Hands where I can see them," Marcus commanded, his voice devoid of any human warmth.

"Do you know who I am?!" Victoria shrieked, scrambling backward across the leather seat, her designer clothes dusted with shattered glass. "This is kidnapping! My family will have your head on a spike!"

"Your family's little corporate coup just hit a slight detour," Marcus replied calmly, motioning to his men. "Grab her."

Before Victoria could scream again, a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties were locked firmly around her wrists. As they dragged her out of the vehicle, the doors of the private elevator at the back of the garage chimed softly and slid open.

Ethan stepped out into the dim garage. He wasn't wearing his usual corporate suit; he wore a dark wool overcoat, his hands tucked deep into his pockets, his expression a mask of absolute, chilling authority.

Victoria struggled fiercely against the guards, her face red with rage and humiliation as they forced her to her knees in front of Ethan.

"Ethan! You psychotic lunatic! Let me go right now!" she screamed, thrashing wildly.

Ethan stopped a few feet away, looking down at her as if she were nothing more than an insect squashed beneath his shoe.

"You really thought you were smarter than everyone else, didn't you, Victoria?" Ethan said quietly, his voice echoing in the hollow garage. "You thought my uncle Julian and your offshore accounts were invisible. But you made one fatal mistake."

Victoria glared up at him, panting heavily, her mascara running down her cheeks. "What... what mistake?"

Ethan pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and dropped it right onto the wet concrete in front of her face.

"You underestimated a father’s instinct," Ethan replied smoothly. "While you were busy trying to fabricate child endangerment claims and orchestrating a hostile stock takeover, my forensic accountants didn't just trace your funds to Julian. They traced them straight to the embezzlement scandal at Sterling & Croft Law Firm."

Victoria’s color drained completely. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.

"That's right," Ethan continued, stepping closer. "Your sister Samantha has been skimming millions from client trust accounts to fund your family’s failing real estate ventures. The moment my legal team handed those wire transfers to federal investigators two hours ago, your family's empire officially began to crumble."

"You... you lied..." Victoria whispered, her voice trembling violently. "You destroyed us..."

"No, Victoria," Ethan corrected her, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "You declared war on my family. I merely finished it."

He nodded to Marcus. "Take her to the federal holding facility. Make sure she has a very, very comfortable cell next to her uncle Julian."

As Victoria was dragged away, screaming obscenities into the dark, echoing parking garage, Ethan turned and looked up toward the towering lights of the city skyline. The storm had finally broken, and he was standing victorious in the ruins.
