Chapter 8 - GHOSTS OF THE PASTThe silence in the grand living room was so profound that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock sounded like a drumbeat.

Ethan stood by the edge of the sofa, staring at the young woman sitting before him. Her name was Clara. She was his younger sister—the sibling everyone in the family had believed died in a tragic overseas mountaineering accident twelve years ago, long before Ethan inherited his father’s corporate empire.
"Clara..." Ethan breathed out, the name feeling foreign and heavy on his tongue. "How... how is this possible? We buried you. Uncle Julian produced the death certificate, the coroner's report, everything..."
Clara let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "Uncle Julian is a master of fiction, Ethan. He didn't kill me... but he made sure I disappeared. Twelve years ago, I stumbled upon financial ledgers proving that Julian was embezzling millions from our father’s foundation long before father even passed away."
Ethan’s mind raced backward through time, piecing together the horrifying puzzle. "When you threatened to expose him..."
"He didn't want a scandal," Clara nodded, clutching her leather satchel tighter. "So he staged my accident. He had me abducted, drugged, and sent to a secluded private clinic in Eastern Europe under a false identity. I spent over a decade locked away, told that you didn't care, that you had abandoned me to take control of the fortune."
The room seemed to spin around Ethan. The betrayal ran deeper, darker, and much closer to home than he could have ever possibly imagined. Uncle Julian hadn't just been a disgruntled relative seeking a cut of the inheritance; he was a cold-blooded monster who had destroyed their entire family from the inside out.
"Why now, Clara?" Ethan asked, his voice tight with suppressed fury and overwhelming emotion. "If you’ve been trapped all these years... how did you escape?"
"Because of the federal indictments last month," Clara explained earnestly. "When Julian’s assets were frozen and his inner circle collapsed, the clinic guards panicked and abandoned their posts. I managed to slip out, steal a passport, and make my way back to New York. But I didn't come back to reclaim my share of the Vance fortune, Ethan."
She leaned forward, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying urgency. "I came back to warn you. Julian didn't act alone. He had an inside partner—someone even more ruthless, someone who is still sitting inside Vance Global right now, waiting for the exact right moment to strike."
Before Ethan could ask who it was, the heavy oak doors of the private elevator chimed loudly.
Ding.

Ethan and Clara both froze. The elevator doors slid open with a smooth, mechanical hiss.
Standing inside the car wasn't a random intruder. It was David, Ethan’s trusted personal assistant, holding a sleek black briefcase—and a silenced pistol pointed directly at Ethan’s chest.
