Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Gambit

Six months later, the Chicago underworld looked very different.

The old guard—the paranoid bosses and ruthless loan sharks who had traded human lives like commodities—were gone, dismantled by a series of precise federal indictments and hostile corporate takeovers that left the entire Commission reeling. At the center of it all wasn't Dominic Russo, and it wasn't Adrian Cross.

It was me.

Vanguard Holdings had been entirely restructured. The shell companies were dissolved, the real estate portfolio was converted into legitimate community investments, and the Russo-Cross syndicate had transformed into a legal, untouchable conglomerate that quietly controlled half of the Midwest’s shipping and development sectors.

And at home? The Lake Forest mansion no longer felt like a mausoleum.

The gray dresses and respectable coats were gone, replaced by a wardrobe of vibrant, unapologetic color. The study door remained unlocked, and the dining table was no longer set for a ghost.

On a warm September evening, exactly fourteen months after the night Dominic had told me he never wanted me as his wife, I stood on the back veranda watching the Chicago skyline glow in the twilight.

Footsteps approached softly behind me, followed by the familiar, comforting scent of cedarwood and mint. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Dominic pressed his face into the crook of my neck, kissing the skin just beneath my ear.

“You’re late,” I murmured, leaning back into his embrace, my fingers resting over the silver wedding ring on his hand.

“Traffic on the North Side,” Dominic whispered, his voice deep and warm against my skin. “Some new politician trying to play tough with the shipping docks.”

“And what did you tell him?” I asked, a small smile playing on my lips.

“I told him to talk to my wife,” Dominic chuckled softly, tightening his arms around me. “She handles the real estate.”

I turned around in his arms, looking up into those familiar, ice-blue eyes that no longer held any secrets, any distance, or any lies.

“Good,” I said, resting my hands on his chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart. “Because she’s just getting started.”
