Chapter 25 - The Federal Net Closes

While the skirmish at the docks was swiftly neutralized and swept under the rug by corporate security and quiet payoffs, a more insidious threat was closing in from federal corridors.

Agent Marcus Vance sat in his Washington office reviewing wiretap authorizations signed by a federal judge who had finally taken the bait on Vance’s theory regarding Vanguard Global’s hidden assets.

“We have a warrant to seize the secondary servers in the Chicago financial district,” Vance told his superior officer, slamming a folder onto the desk. “If Dominic and Claire Russo are hiding illicit syndicate funds behind those corporate facades, this will expose the whole operation.”

“Be careful, Vance,” his superior warned. “Noah Vance is the senior federal prosecutor handling organized crime oversight in Illinois. If you step on his turf without ironclad proof, he’ll have your badge before lunch.”

“Noah Vance is blinded by family loyalty,” Marcus sneered. “Let’s see how loyal he is when I show him the wire transfers tying his sister’s corporate signature to illegal offshore accounts.”

Two days later, federal agents executed a simultaneous search warrant on Vanguard Global’s downtown financial auditing firm, seizing hard drives, paper ledgers, and digital archives.

When word reached the Lake Forest mansion, Dominic walked into the study to find Claire standing calmly by the window, sipping her black coffee as she watched the autumn leaves fall.

“Federal task force raided the downtown auditing firm an hour ago,” Dominic said, leaning against the doorway. “They’re coming for the secondary records.”

Claire turned around, a serene, confident smile playing on her lips. “Let them come, Dominic. We anticipated this the day we restructured the company.”
