Chapter 22 - Whispers in the Dark

While the garden party in Lake Forest resonated with laughter, a thousand miles away in a sterile, dimly lit conference room in Washington, D.C., a federal task force file was being reopened.
Agent Marcus Vance—unrelated to the disgraced former CFO, but bearing the same relentless ambition—slapped a thick manila folder down onto a polished steel table. Across from him sat three high-ranking officials from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Directorate.
“Vanguard Global Enterprises looks clean on paper,” Agent Vance said, tapping a finger against a printed corporate registry featuring Claire Russo’s name as the historical cornerstone. “Legitimate real estate portfolios, multi-million-dollar philanthropic foundations, spotless audits in Zurich and New York. But empires built by the Chicago Outfit don't just go legit overnight. There’s a ghost in the machine.”
“You’ve been chasing ghosts for three years, Vance,” the director sighed, rubbing his temples. “The Russo-Cross syndicate dissolved their illicit holdings a decade ago. Dominic Russo is a respected private equity investor, and Claire Russo runs medical foundations. If you move on them without hard evidence, their legal team—led by Noah Vance, no less—will tear us to pieces in federal court.”
“They restructured through a web of international escrow accounts,” Agent Vance insisted, his eyes narrowing. “And rumors from the European underground suggest someone new is trying to poke holes in Vanguard’s eastern European shipping routes. Someone who wants to force Dominic Russo out of retirement.”

“Who?”
“An old associate of the Sicilian Commission,” Vance whispered. “Don Salvatore’s grandson, Dante. And he’s coming to Chicago.”
