Chapter 17 - The Geneva Estate

The private estate of Victor Sterling sat perched on a lush, emerald-green cliff overlooking the mirror-like expanse of Lake Geneva. Surrounded by wrought-iron gates, manicured French gardens, and private security details disguised as landscape gardeners, the sprawling stone villa looked like a sanctuary of European aristocracy.

It was anything but.

The black Mercedes Maybach carrying Dominic, Claire, and Adrian glided smoothly up the crushed-limestone driveway, coming to a halt before the massive oak double doors of the villa. Two private security guards in sharp suits stepped forward, their hands resting cautiously near their suit jackets.

Before they could speak, Dominic stepped out of the vehicle, followed by Adrian and Claire. The sheer, terrifying aura of authority radiating off Dominic made the guards hesitate just long enough for Adrian to slip past them with a polite, mocking nod.

“Tell Victor his Chicago associates are here to discuss a merger,” Adrian drawled, casually pushing open the heavy oak doors without waiting for an invitation.

The interior of the villa was a museum of classical art and exorbitant wealth—marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and walls lined with original Impressionist paintings. They didn't have to wait long. From the grand double staircase at the far end of the foyer, a tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored Italian suit descended slowly. His face was unlined, his eyes sharp and reptilian behind thin titanium-rimmed glasses.

Victor Sterling.

“Russo,” Sterling said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with condescension as he reached the bottom of the stairs. “And Cross. I must admit, I didn't expect the legendary Chicago syndicate bosses to fly all the way to Switzerland just to hand over their European portfolio in person.”

Sterling’s cold, calculating gaze then shifted to Claire. A faint, patronizing smirk touched the corners of his mouth. “And you must be Claire. The famous signature holding together a multi-billion-dollar house of cards. Tell me, does it exhaust you, playing dress-up in a world of sharks?”

Claire didn't flinch. She walked slowly toward the bottom of the stairs, stopping just a few feet away from him, her posture rigid, her chin held high, and her gaze piercingly cold.

“I used to think sharks were terrifying, Mr. Sterling,” Claire said, her voice echoing clearly through the grand foyer. “Then I realized they only attack when they’re bleeding out in shallow water.”

Sterling’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a flicker of genuine irritation. “You are trespassing, Mrs. Russo. My legal team has already filed the escrow freeze with the Swiss banking authority. By morning, your assets will be frozen, and your corporate charter revoked.”

“Your legal team filed based on falsified compliance documents from a shell company in the Caymans,” Claire countered smoothly, pulling a thin, black leather folder from her handbag and tossing it onto a marble console table beside her. “Documents that were quietly audited and flagged by the United States Department of Justice approximately twenty minutes before our plane landed in Zurich.”

Sterling’s eyes flicked to the folder. For the first time, color drained slightly from his impeccably tanned face.

“You’re bluffing,” Sterling hissed, stepping forward.

“Am I?” Claire stepped closer, invading his personal space with absolute, unshakeable confidence. “Noah Vance—now a senior federal prosecutor in the United States—signed off on the mutual legal assistance treaty requests targeting your European capital reserves. The moment the Swiss authorities cross-reference your escrow accounts with the Department of Justice files, you won't just lose Vanguard Global. You’ll spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado.”

Sterling stared at her, the mask of the untouchable corporate raider completely shattering to reveal a trapped, desperate man. He looked at Dominic, who stood silently in the background like an executioner waiting for a final word, and then back at Claire.

“What do you want?” Sterling whispered, his voice trembling slightly.

May you like

“Two things,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. “First, you sign over every single share of Aethelgard Capital to Vanguard Global for the grand total of one US dollar. Second, you pack a single bag, catch the next private flight to a country without an extradition treaty, and you never, ever speak our names again.”

Sterling swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached into his jacket pocket for a pen.
