Chapter 16 - The Flight to Geneva

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the starless midnight sky above the Atlantic, cruising silently at forty thousand feet. Inside the luxurious cabin, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The polished mahogany table was covered with financial dossiers, encrypted legal briefs, and international banking manifests detailing the multi-billion-dollar assets of Vanguard Global.

Claire sat across from Dominic, her expression a study in concentrated fury. She had read through Victor Sterling’s corporate dossier twice, absorbing every detail of the hostile takeover attempt targeting the Swiss escrow accounts.

“He thinks because my name is on the foundational trust from my father’s old debt settlement, he can weaponize Swiss regulatory laws against me,” Claire said, her voice dangerously calm as she closed the file folder. “He thinks I’m still the vulnerable, trapped girl my father traded to settle a ledger.”

Dominic reached across the table, covering her hand with his own. His fingers were warm, steady, and unyielding. “Sterling is a shark who operates in a world of diplomatic immunity and Swiss banking secrecy, Claire. He doesn't play by Chicago rules. He won't send enforcers with guns; he’ll send regulators, frozen accounts, and Interpol arrest warrants.”

“Then it’s a good thing we aren't playing by his rules either,” Claire replied, a dangerous, confident spark flashing in her ice-blue eyes. “You taught me how to survive in the underworld, Dominic. But I spent the last three years mastering the corporate overworld. Sterling thinks he’s hunting a ghost. Let’s show him what happens when the ghost fights back.”

Adrian Cross, sitting nearby with a glass of neat bourbon, let out a low, appreciative whistle. “God, I love watching you two strategize. It’s like watching a masterclass in psychological warfare. So, what’s the play when we touch down in Zurich?”

“We don't go to the Swiss banking commission,” Claire said, leaning forward and placing both hands flat on the table. “We go directly to Sterling’s private estate on the shores of Lake Geneva. If he wants to play high-stakes corporate poker, we bypass the middlemen and put all our chips directly on his table.”

“And if he refuses to back down?” Dominic asked, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

“Then we bankrupt him using the very escrow accounts he’s trying to steal,” Claire said with an icy smile. “Every single franc he holds in European shell companies is tied to illicit state subsidies. I’ve already had Noah run a preliminary compliance audit through the federal database channels before we left Chicago. Sterling’s empire is built on a house of cards.”

Dominic stared at her for a long moment, the deep, overwhelming pride swelling in his chest completely eclipsing any lingering fear. The woman who had once cried in the dark Lake Forest kitchen was now an international strategist capable of outmaneuvering the most ruthless financial predators on the globe.

“Pilot,” Dominic called out, raising his voice toward the cockpit door. “Update our flight path. We’re landing at Geneva private airstrip in four hours. Prepare the ground transport.”
