Chapter 29 - The Unwritten Horizon

Spring returned to Chicago, painting the manicured gardens of the Lake Forest mansion in brilliant shades of green and gold. The twin girls were growing up fast, excelling in school and bringing endless joy to the grand halls that had once echoed with icy silence.

On a quiet Sunday morning, Dominic and Claire stood on the back lawn watching the girls chase their golden retriever across the grass. Dominic slipped his hand into Claire’s, their fingers locking together with the effortless grace of two people who had weathered every storm life could throw at them and emerged victorious on the other side.

“What are you thinking about?” Dominic asked softly, looking down at her.

“I was thinking about that red dress,” Claire smiled, turning her head to meet his gaze. “The one you told me was too dangerous to wear.”

Dominic let out a deep, rich laugh, pulling her flush against his side. “You wore it straight into my worst enemy’s party and completely turned my world upside down.”

“And you hated every second of it,” Claire teased.

“I was terrified,” Dominic admitted quietly, his voice turning deeply sincere as he looked into her ice-blue eyes. “Terrified that I had pushed away the only real thing I was ever meant to hold onto. But I would live through every single hell we faced just to end up right here, with you.”

Claire smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart.

“Good,” she whispered. “Because we have a lot of years left to rule our empire.”
