Chapter 15 - The Unseen Thread

Three years passed without a single drop of blood staining the marble floors of the Lake Forest mansion.
The transition of the Russo-Cross syndicate into a fully legitimate international conglomerate—now operating under the unimpeachable corporate banner of Vanguard Global Enterprises—was studied in Ivy League business schools as a masterclass in restructuring. Claire Russo sat on the board of directors as executive vice president, her name commanding instant respect across corporate boardrooms in New York, London, and Tokyo. Dominic had gracefully stepped back from day-to-day street operations, transitioning into a respected philanthropist and private equity investor who quietly bankrolled urban renewal projects across Chicago’s historic South and West sides.
Noah had graduated top of his class from Harvard Law and had recently returned to Chicago as a senior federal prosecutor, blissfully unaware of the deeper corporate machinery his sister and brother-in-law operated, yet serving as the ultimate legal shield against any future underworld incursions.
Yet, stability in a world as vast and volatile as international finance and organized crime was never absolute. It was a living, breathing organism that required constant vigilance.
It was a crisp autumn evening when the secure red telephone on Dominic’s private library desk rang. The red line was reserved exclusively for one person: Adrian Cross.
Dominic picked up the receiver on the second ring, his expression instantly tightening into a mask of cold focus. “Cross. What’s burning?”
“We have a situation, Dominic,” Adrian’s voice came through, uncharacteristically grim. “It’s not New York, and it’s not the Commission. It’s overseas.”
Dominic stood up from his leather chair, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out over the manicured autumn gardens where Claire was currently pruning her prize-winning rose bushes. “Define overseas.”
“Zurich,” Adrian replied. “The Swiss banking conglomerate holding the primary escrow accounts for Vanguard Global just received a multi-billion-dollar acquisition bid from an anonymous holding company called Aethelgard Capital. And the primary legal representative executing the hostile takeover is none other than Victor Sterling.”
Dominic’s breath hitched slightly. The name sent a cold shockwave through his veins. Victor Sterling was not a mobster; he was a corporate raider—a ruthless, untouchable phantom of the international financial elite who specialized in destroying sovereign syndicates and laundering state-sponsored capital through European tax havens. Years ago, before Dominic took over the Chicago Outfit, Sterling had tried to bankrupt the Russo family through a series of predatory loan defaults that had driven Dominic’s father to the brink of ruin.
“Sterling’s been dead to the world for five years,” Dominic said, his grip tightening on the telephone receiver until his knuckles turned white. “He retired to Geneva after the Swiss banking investigations.”
“He didn't retire, Dominic. He regrouped,” Adrian said grimly. “And he knows about Vanguard Global. More importantly, he knows that Claire’s maiden name is still legally tied to the foundational escrow trusts in Zurich. He’s planning to freeze her assets, slap her with an international fraud indictment, and force us to hand over the entire North American shipping grid for pennies on the dollar.”

Dominic stared out the window at Claire, who had paused her gardening and was looking up toward the study window, sensing the shift in the air. She offered him a small, reassuring smile—unaware that a shadow from their past had just returned to tear their world apart.
“Get your private jet ready, Adrian,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a lethal, resolute register. “We’re flying to Zurich tonight.”
