Chapter 2 - The Unwelcome Visitor

Colton stood up immediately, his protective instincts flaring. He strode down the narrow hallway and pulled the door open, expecting a paramedic or a neighbor.
Instead, standing on the landing beneath the flickering fluorescent light of the apartment complex, was Maris Klein.
His assistant looked breathless, her tailored trench coat damp from the rain, holding an open tablet against her chest.
“Colton,” Maris blurted out, before freezing as she saw where she was. Her eyes darted from Colton to the modest, peeling wallpaper of the hallway. “The board... they’re screaming. The acquisition of Apex Logistics is hanging by a thread because you walked out of the building. How on earth did you end up in—?”
“Maris,” Colton interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that usually made senior vice presidents turn pale. “How did you find me?”
“Your corporate phone’s GPS,” she said defensively, holding up her tablet. “You missed three emergency calls and a video conference with the Japanese investors. I had to track you. Who lives here?”
Colton stepped out onto the landing and pulled the door half-shut behind him, blocking Maris’s view of Solana and Junie.
“Listen to me very carefully, Maris,” Colton said, his eyes burning with a cold intensity. “Call the board. Tell them I am extending the deadline by forty-eight hours. If they don't like it, they can retract their offers. I don't care.”
Maris blinked, her professional composure cracking. “Extend the deadline? Colton, this is a three-billion-dollar valuation! You can’t just—what is happening here? Are you being blackmailed?”
“No,” Colton said, running a hand through his damp dark hair. “I’m fixing a mistake that was made twenty years ago.”
He turned back toward the apartment door, but before he could step inside, Solana appeared in the hallway, leaning against the wall for support.
“Who is at the door, Colton?” she asked softly.
Maris peered past Colton’s shoulder, her eyes widening as she took in Solana’s appearance and the modest apartment interior. Then, Maris’s expression shifted from confusion to sudden recognition as she locked eyes with the older woman.
Maris gasped, taking a half-step back. “Wait... I know that face. You’re... you’re Solana Rivera. My mother worked as an archivist for the Vale Foundation; she had a photograph of you and young Colton in the estate gardens.”
Solana flinched as if struck. “Your mother is Clara Klein?”
“Yes,” Maris nodded, bewildered. “She always wondered what happened to you. She said you disappeared overnight after a massive blowout with Eleanor Vale.”

Colton stared between them, his chest tightening. “A blowout about what, Maris?”
Maris swallowed hard, looking nervously at Colton. “My mother never knew all the details. But she said it had something to do with the night your father died, Colton. And a secret Eleanor Vale buried so deep she thought nobody would ever dig it up.”
